"We Lost Our Identity" - Inside Peavey’s Return to Roots

Peavey, the food stamps of amplifiers

I don't think I can think of a company that had such a sure thing for so long, both amps and guitars, and fucked it up so royally

Peavey used to be budget models made in the USA and i swear to fucking god, I played like a t50 through a butcher or some shit at a pawn shop a week or two back, and it honestly BOTH were better than ANYTHING IMPORTED I PLAYED THIS ENTIRE YEAR.

If peaveys stupid ass kept plugging along with USA made stuff for realistic prices instead of chasing the chinese import dragon, not only would they still be in business they would probably be one of the biggest US manufacturers still around.

It's just unbelievable to me that a single company can shoot themselves in the fucking foot over and over and over and over again like this

I wish James Brown would return an revamp their entire trans tube tech for the modern world. James’ pedals he designed and sold the company of sounded really good. Their single most successful amplifier which made their company successful is what he designed.

Those transtube practice amps were the literal backbone of every garage jam session I had as a 12 and 13 year old and they punched well above their price point

Literally everything good peavey is known for is because of James Brown. Why he isn’t VP of engineering there with a multi million dollar salary I have no clue. Hartley owes everything to him.

I was never a Peavey 5150 guy but I had a Triple-XXX back in the day and loved that amp! Peavey had some great stuff back in the day and as many mentioned, they jacked it all up.

I think a lot of companies do that. You have to listen to consumers and keep the stuff that sells and also push forward with technology. It was like when Gibson came out with the backwards V and robot guitar. Nobody wanted that shit.

Well, everything with amps

Their guitars are actually excellent as well - their late 80s superstrats and teles etc, especially the high end stuff, are some of the nicest custom shop guitars ive ever played. If you can ever find them, they sell for like 1/6th what they should be worth and they are a serious sleeper

I think Apple fucked up the mentalities of so many business leaders. They saw Steve Jobs and his “Fuck everybody else, I will tell the public what they want. It’s all about me me me and what I think” attitude and, narcissistic as they all are, could not possibly consider that maybe not every single business leader is equipped with the creativity and business acumen to be able to do that.

It's not just that. It was NAFTA and Clinton adopting and implementing the wide-scale de-industrialization of america.

Every business saw the opportunity to cut their labor costs to nothing and refused to pay attention to the many hidden costs that come with it.

Peavey is just the dumbest example because they built their entire brand, literally, on making affordable USA made stuff.

id much rather have one of these old USA guitars for $500 than a new import for nearly 3x that

I grew up on Peavey amps. Cheap, reliable, utilitarian tools. My first practice amp was a 10w SS Peavey combo with an 8” speaker. I graduated to a 2x12 Stereo Chorus (had at least two…), and they rocked. Wouldn't mind having one in the stable to crank on occasion… Then graduated to a Peavey Roadmaster, on a 1978 Carvin 4x12. Would LOVE to have another (with fresh tubes - I ain’t re-tubing one of those monsters 😆). Doom/Sludge for days 😆

As a company, you have to move forward but hold on to what got you there in the first place. I think a lot of companies give people stuff they don't want and don't give them what they want.

Example, here is a coil tap but you gotta buy your own case or gig bag.

Peavey XXX one of the nastiest ever.
Picked up my old Bandit from my Parents house last year. Another ripper with a few pedals
