Sweet. Looking forward to your review. From what I've read, we seem to have a fairly similar taste in amps.

Yup vintage + boost = awesome. Also the pushed mode gives some nice SRV tones, I had a clip that was posted in the clips section of this board with that but that section appears to be gone.

The clip has pretty bad playing but i dont claim to be a good blues player. Maybe you can open up that clips part again but only allow external links, it would be cool to keep track of how many people listen to it.

Congrats. I persoanlly think the K IV is way nicer sounding but thats my ears, not your. Those are cool amps though. Have fun man. At the end of the day thats what it's all about.

I really WANTED to like the Mark IV more, but I just didn't... I like alot of the recordings I've heard online of the Mark series amps, but I just can't make them work for me in person.

That Mark IV they had has seem alot of use and was marked at $999. I know for sure they would've let it go for $850 or so for me, which I think is a great price, even for a well used Mark IV. But I just couldn't get into it too much.

Chris, can you desribe the difference of the Recto-o-verb to the mark IV, never played a recto-o-verb, but I love my mark IV....

Hmmm... I really don't mean this wrong at all, because I believe the Mark series amps are great. They're just not for me.

To me, the Mark III I used to own and this Mark IV that I've tried a few times both can sound "muffled" very easily. I usually had them either sounding muffled or too bright. I could never dial it in just like I like it. They also have a weird midrange thing that pretty much can't be dialed out unless the middle slider on the graphic EQ is ALL the way down. Then it's dialed out too much. lol...

To me, the Rectoverb has a much more aggressive voice. It's not smooth or midrangey like the Mark IV. It also has ALOT more punch and lows. Since it's not as smooth as the Mark IV, it can come across as "buzzy." But if you dial the presence and treble knobs in just right, that buzz turns into "cut" and sounds like it would work very well with a band.

I don't claim to be an expert on the Mark amps or anything, but that's my experience so far with them. Like I said, they do sound good. It's just not my type of tone. I'm at the point now where I don't really like the Sykes tone on the 1987 Whitensake album much anymore and the Mark III and Mark IV both pretty much sounded like that to me.

I should also point out that I ONLY used the highest gain (red?) channel on the Mark IV. I never even messed with the other channels.

Chris

No need to tip toe around, if the mark series aren't for you, then at they aren't for you. Its not going to change my opinion of the amp.

I really like the smoothness of the mark IV lead channel. I like the lack of buzziness, but it is at a contrast to a mesa recto or typical marshall sound.

I am still waiting for you to try a marshall silver jubilee :D

Be sure to check out the pushed mode, it sounds killer with a boost. There's some great lead tones in there.

Vintage mode with a boost is just pure liquid! I've never played a Rect-O-Verb, but if you can run orange/vintage/tube recto/boost/presence off, you will get a very smooth and killer lead tone. 8)

I noticed a guy trading in a mint used Rect-O-Verb head the other day when I got that Peavey Windsor and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. So... I went back today and returned the Peavey Windsor (great sounding amp for people on a budget) and sat down with a used Mark IV head and this Rect-O-Verb head.

I liked this Rect-O-Verb head more, so I brought it home. It sounds great! I've been wanting one for a few years and finally took the plunge.

I'll run it through it's paces tomorrow and this upcoming week, but I'm pretty excited about it and thought I'd pass it along. :)

Chris

Wow, (you) being a diehard Marshall fan it's interesting to watch you go through this Mesa gear :)

Gigged three nights a week for 4 years back in the late 90's with that head. I played it through a Rivera cab that two 75wtters on the top and the LosLoBottom sub in the bottom. I also played a Universe with a JB in the bridge. Great sounding rig for the band I was in. Dont think Im into that tone anymore but for that type of tone it doesnt get much better IMHO.

Nice score man!

awesome dude, whenever my taxes hit my bank account i'll be picking up jackbootedthug's rectoverb.

I just put three Tung-Sol Reissue 12AX7s and a duet of new Mullard Reissue EL34s in the Rectoverb and fired it up. You can hear the sweet midrange from the EL34s! Sounds pretty darn good. :)

Congrats! That's a nice setup, looks great too. I've always preferred EL34's in the Rectos I've had. I've got SED EL34s in my DR now.
