for the record there is no better way to add size and space to your tone "clearly" than going w/d or w/d/w
delay/verb in front of a clean amp or in loop is cool for practical reasons, and can have cool effect in it's own right, but if you want your tone to spread out massively as if in a giant room CLEARLY, w/d (w) is the way to go.
for rock, the bigger the dry cab, imo, the better the dry tone i also like a 2x12 for dry.
1x12 is fine for wet imo, but ultimately the main point is resolution for that guy. almost a PA mentality. you want it to clearly display the sound of your dry rig being affected by the time based effects to create the illusion of size. EV's are really popular for wet cabs because they behave more like PA speakers--no break up-- with a warm guitaristic twist.
i use a tech 21 power engine for my wet cab in my w/d rig. i hated the stock speaker in it---dynamically speaking it was very midrangey and lacked smooth lows and highs--- and so i traded that out for a scumback. so much better!
and since the tech 21 has balanced xlr ins and outs/throughs, i can send a balanced output from my rack fx to the 21, then take a XLR line out from 21 to the house in the event they are low on mics. but in that method you need to be mindful of what you are sending them, because you take the speaker out of the equation--can get brittle/direct-y--if there is no speaker emulation in
the path. so i normally like to mic the wet speaker too if possible.
and for w/d/w i have a EV powered wedge w
ith balanced xlr I/O to complete
This many be dump question but I never tried a w/d set up yet,but I have ran. A stereo set up with 2 heads and stereo processor and ran 1 4x12 on Left side stage and 1 on right and sounded great I don't understand the difference
between the 2 set ups, running w/d rig or stereo but I see alot of people run w/d !!
the trifecta!

It was great. I just don't like hauling all the gear anymore.

Thanks, it was great, but a lot to haul.I had a Herbert and VH4s. I ran out of the loops into a switching system so I effective could chose between 7 channels (4 on the VH4 and 3 on the Herbie). I used the power section of the Herbie for dry and the stereo VH4s for wet. Loved it.
Before my Soldano days. I think Bogner snuck in there before the SLO as well.
