So do any of you guys do the wet/dry thing live? Just wondering how well it works micing both cabinets?

Its frowned upon by sound guys around here... everyone is mono for the most part. My amp does not have an effects loop and I only need a little delay for ambiance. I'm waiting for the bad cat unleash in 16ohms to be released so I can have all the benefits of a wet dry rig using one cab.

Works great. Keeps you out of the nasty things that happen using two amp inputs/switching/phasing issues. Separate mics to the FOH to level out as required by the sound guy. Keeps your main dry amp free to deliver unaltered tone and suck from FX. Never had a problem with it except for needing to haul two cabs around.

As far as the wet amp, can you get by with a small combo? How would it affect your overall tone if the dry amp were a head and 4x12?

I use 2 2x12's for my live w/d rig and love it. As far as 4x12, 2x12, 1x12,.... I run the same speaker configs in each of my cabs and therefore micing is easy and I get same freq, volume, tone in the mix and front of the house. Have my nice dirty rhythm tone running thru both channels of board... then when I engage fx, I get the nice blend from wet cab in mix... my soundguy just sets the faders, eq, and done!

As long as your using same speaker configs I really don't think it matters what size cab ur using.. you are only micing one of the speakers most times anyways... so as long as mic'd speakers are same freq, response then all should be good. Of course your stage volume and tone will be dramtically different with 4x12's compared to 1x12's so that may play havoc with your ears...or not... :D I love my 2x12's in my w/d rig.. they sound plenty huge and easy to deal with in mix. Cheers bro

I do it all the time. One dry 4x12 and one wet 4x12. Mic them both and use two channels at the board - you're not stereo, just taking up two channels. Have the soundman push the wet cab a little more for solos.

So what do you use to power the second cabinet?

Tube or Solid State poweramp plus a small cab.. anything works fine to be honest. I have even gigged Wet/Dry using a head and 4x12 for the Dry and then a small solid state combo for the Wet side. The size of the wet cab doesn't really matter, since once you're miked up it all gets pushed through the PA and generally sounds massive

I usually have a rack with a SDE3000 and a HHV800 power amp which powers the second 4x12.

But, you could also use another head with an effects loop. Just send the line out of your amp into the delay (or whatever FX you're using) and then send that signal into the effects loop return of the second amp. That way, you're just using the power section of that head.

another wet/dry guy here!
for the record there is no better way to add size and space to your tone "clearly" than going w/d or w/d/w

delay/verb in front of a clean amp or in loop is cool for practical reasons, and can have cool effect in it's own right, but if you want your tone to spread out massively as if in a giant room CLEARLY, w/d (w) is the way to go.

for rock, the bigger the dry cab, imo, the better the dry tone i also like a 2x12 for dry.

1x12 is fine for wet imo, but ultimately the main point is resolution for that guy. almost a PA mentality. you want it to clearly display the sound of your dry rig being affected by the time based effects to create the illusion of size. EV's are really popular for wet cabs because they behave more like PA speakers--no break up-- with a warm guitaristic twist.

i use a tech 21 power engine for my wet cab in my w/d rig. i hated the stock speaker in it---dynamically speaking it was very midrangey and lacked smooth lows and highs--- and so i traded that out for a scumback. so much better!

and since the tech 21 has balanced xlr ins and outs/throughs, i can send a balanced output from my rack fx to the 21, then take a XLR line out from 21 to the house in the event they are low on mics. but in that method you need to be mindful of what you are sending them, because you take the speaker out of the equation--can get brittle/direct-y--if there is no speaker emulation in the path. so i normally like to mic the wet speaker too if possible.

and for w/d/w i have a EV powered wedge with balanced xlr I/O to complete the trifecta!

viv was using a line out of the mojave scorpion to feed the echo, then into a crate power block->marshall cab for his thin lizzy gig!

This many be dump question but I never tried a w/d set up yet,but I have ran. A stereo set up with 2 heads and stereo processor and ran 1 4x12 on Left side stage and 1 on right and sounded great I don't understand the difference
between the 2 set ups, running w/d rig or stereo but I see alot of people run w/d !!

the trifecta!

I use to in stereo - with a stereo PA:

It was great. I just don't like hauling all the gear anymore.

Thanks, it was great, but a lot to haul.I had a Herbert and VH4s. I ran out of the loops into a switching system so I effective could chose between 7 channels (4 on the VH4 and 3 on the Herbie). I used the power section of the Herbie for dry and the stereo VH4s for wet. Loved it.

Before my Soldano days. I think Bogner snuck in there before the SLO as well. :)

Hurt foot

This is one that I used:

That is outrageous! Is the MESA 20/20 for running a wet side? What does that Egnater device do?
