Looking through my current edition of Sweetwater and stumbled across Fender. Yeah what a surprise. So they're advertising the Eric Clapton Stratocaster for a ridiculous $1600 (for a plank of wood). First of all Clapton never did anything worth mentioning since his departure from Cream where the infinitely talented Ginger Baker made Eric famous.

So I'm thinking to myself, "self" WTF, they're putting this mediocre guitar player (at best) on a pedestal as if he's somehow revolutionary when they won't even give the greatest electric guitarist of modern history even a blink of the eye - Jimi Hendrix.

Listen if you dare.

I just saw the documentary on PBS about Ginger Baker, and while he's a great drummer, he's a total piece of shit human being. Fuck him.

imo, i reckon the reason Fender doesnt have a bunch of Jimi signature strats is because firstly it just TOO obvious. The guitar market is already totally saturated with choice. On top of that, EVERYONE knows that Jimi was the greatest of all time. Even little kids who are just getting into guitar probably have Jimi posters on their walls that their dads or older brothers put up for them. Jimi is everywhere, even in the subconcious of anyone who plays guitar, in any style. So, because of that Fender probably feels that releasing a signature Jimi strat wouldnt have any "impact" in the market. It would be like trying to have a conversation at a rock concert.....amongst all the noise the words just get lost. Its all about $$$$$, so im sure that if Fender really thought they could make a lot of coin by making another signature Jimi strat, they WOULD.

Secondly, there are probably royalties and licensing issues with anything Jimi related. Companies would no doubt have to pay a LOT of money to his estate just to get permission to release a product with his name on it. Again, after all expenses, there isnt really a market for it IMO.

Last but not least, if you think about where music (guitar music) is at this moment in time, there wouldnt really be THAT many pro players who would actually find a Jimi strat very useful / practical for the music they are making.

With all that being said, i would actually love a Jimi signature strat....just shits and giggles! :)

I dunno, I gotta admit, I appreciate a lot of the "greats" but am not a fan of most of them. I dig Hendrix most out of the "trinity" (Clapton/Page/Hendrix). I am not a fan of Clapton outside of Yardbirds, Cream. I like the music as a whole more than his actual playing. I like some of his personal catalog but he literally never occurs to me as music to listen to or be inspired by. I feel the same way about Zep. Very much a love/hate relationship.

Forget about the bland pop albums that Clapton has put out.
Have you ever seen him play live?
Clapton is a MONSTER!

I've never seen Clapton do anything SRV couldn't do 1000 times better.

By that logic, B.B. King must really suck.

By what logic? It's completely true.

This whole argument is dumb. Hendrix hasn't done shit since 1970.

But what he did up to 1970 was epic and so far advanced for it's time that people still cite him as an influence. He deserves a lot more respect than Clapton...

You can't be serious

SRV? Clapton was changing guitar when SRV was changing his diaper

I'm the same way. I appreciate what they did, but I've not listened to a Clapton/Hendrix/Beck/Page/EVH song in ages. Just not interesting to me, personally. If I'm going to go back decades, I'd rather listen to King Crimson, Zappa, etc.
