Unless you boys go to a Boston concert then you won't understand how good his rig sounds. Honestly listen to a few Boston songs , and I'm not talking about the first album , "listen to surrender to me" "walk on" or " I had a good time " " corporate America"

I imagine he hits a note and 14 seconds later it comes out of the speaker. :)

He must have made some improvements, it was 22 seconds last year. :)

With all that shit i still think his tone sucked .
Great song writer and player but i can't stand that SS nasal tone .
I would take the straight up AC/DC tone any day of the year over that .

Yay for you. :D

Love it or hate it,the dude has his own sound. Instantly recognizable. And songs that define an era,and will live on well after him. (Tho,come to think of it,I am sure they said the same thing about the Jazz from the roaring 20's,and I couldn't begin to name one of those hokey tunes)

And I would agree about him being able to get close to his tone with an axe/fx or kemper, and with better effects parameters. But if I designed a bunch of gear,I'd wanna use it too.

Boston is coming to my area with Foreigner and Rick Derringer. I wanna go just to hear "rock and roll hoochie coo" and get a look at Tom's rig in person.

I listened to all of the songs you suggested. It sounds like a Crate SS amp with some FX.

Interesting thread. I had to laugh when someone said he's looking for the power button

I have (more than) a feeling a bunch of that stuff is for show.

I think you may be wrong here, I just saw them like 3 weeks ago and middle of the show Tom was messing around with settings. The reason the rig is massive is because in order to make it sound as good as it does (which completely matches the records) he needs a lot of gear setup to replicate all those songs, like I said each song sounds EXACTLY like the one on the record, plus all that is not his rig either, it appears like everyone playing is plugged into some part of it.

-so SARAH CONNOR's was right,.... the machines are taking over-

I recently saw them- 1rst row..the sound comin off the stage was killer..Tom is a genius whether people want to admit it or not.My friend's band opened for them the night I saw them and Tom and his band was really nice, polite, and welcoming to my friends band. And yes, parts of that rig was shared by the other guitarists. Some may say the rig looks like a bunch of spaghetti mess; but it sounds incredible!..and that's the bottom line...and the hyperspace pedal?..nothing touches it.Kudos to Tom for all his contributions!

I agree. Saw Cheap Trick with Boston several months back. We made it through 3 songs before the guitar tone threatened to waterboard my brain. Doesn't matter if you have 3rd row seats if it sounds like a$$.

Rick Nielson sounded great through his new Fuchs setup, so go figure. Rick and Tom both had their rigs in the same place on stage, so it wasn't a difference in angle or anything like that.

Oh well, less is usually more in so many different subjects or categories in life.

His tone was always processed sounding. But he wrote great tunes. That's what sells.

Agreed, but his tone used to be a lot better live, too. I saw them back in the late 70's, early 80's so I have a good reference to compare to.
