So, I ended up taking the amp in to Tim Schroeder to get it re-tubed. Awesome dude, by the way. I talked through the amp a bit and asked him to take a look at the inside, check the caps, tubes, etc.
1. The amp is bone stock except two speaker outputs were plugged up. He didn't seem to see evidence of them ever actually been connected, so thinks that may have happened at the factory but could not know for sure. Otherwise no evidence of modding in its history. Score!
2. The caps needed replacing. He did that, put in new F&T caps and Sprague Atoms.
3. Modded the amp back to stock 6550 spec, then put in KT88's (Gold Lions) and biased.
I have it back. Put it through my new Mills V30 loaded cab. Sounded horrible. Started to get discouraged.
Put it back through my Genz Benz cab with K85's, and it was a lot better. Slammed the front with the SD-1, and even better still, but maybe need to tweak my settings more to get where I want to be. The low end still doesn't chunk the way I aim for. Playing next to my bandmate's Trem o Verb, the Marshall lacks a fullness that I thought the KT88's would bring and is kind of harsh on the high end. Maybe the new tubes and/or caps need time to break in.
