What amp for the tone in my head.

I remember interview with guitarist
It was an ADA into a jcm800
When I saw them years ago
It was Jcm800 with boss super OD pedals

I would say a JVM satch
Maybe 5153

I've read in a old guitar mag: it is an JCM800 Jose modded and a boss sd-1 to boost for the leads

It's pretty bright
As others said Marshall mod
Like a ceriatone chupacabra
Cameron Suhr se 100
Any of those

Here you go. This is my grail tone as well. I heard that is was an Ada into a peavey power amp. The peavey that had EL84's. Don't remember the model. I have gotten very close with an Ada into a Splawn QR as well as just a Splawn on gear 2 OD 2. I think my missing element is H30's which will be my next cab.

Yep. No gimmicks there. That's JCM territory.

Now, about the women of the 80s... I miss this period of ladies fashion and sluttiness. I do

Amen to that. I miss this era so much. Oh yeah the music was great as well.

Oh man...Marc kicked ass. I think "Inside Out" is a better sound personally...but to each his own.

No worries, I like that tone as well. This was the first one that came to mind.

I will look into a modded Marshall, or will one of the Egnater seminar heads come close ? How
about a Soldano HR50 ? I have a 4x12 cab, and just want a head that will deliver as close to this tone
as possible.

And yes, I am in total agreement about the babes of the 1980s. No other era can match the beauty, allure,
sensuality, and pure sluttiness of those girls. :D

Thanks,

Scott

I think the most overlooked pieces of gear in getting 80s guitar sounds are EQs. Both pre and post distortion. Lots and lots of guys/bands used parametric or graphic eq before their amps, and you can shape the tone further by adding, say, a graphic in the loop.

I can get pretty close to that tone with my 2204 and boost/EQ pedal combination up front.

I actually got closer to that tone with pedals through a stock (not gain modded) Marshall than some of the modded Marshall's I've had.

Yeah a QR could get there easily.

The Egnater stuff is a little darker than that IMO
Soldano for sure will get close
But Hot rod Marshall is the tone
I believe the Ada was designed by
A Marshall modder Martin golub
He designed it to be a hot rod plexi type of
Tone
I could be wrong on Martin but it was a amp mod

This video has the closest approximation of the dirty guitar tone I am looking for.

What modern high-gain tone monster amp will give me this, or the closest to it ?

+1 on that. Get that 800 foundation with the right speakers and an EQ in the loop and without Diglio's hands you can come as close as you're gonna get.

Yeah, Curt (Chubtone) kicks major ass!

Sounds like a bit of wah on that lead as well..

So the the cheap route?

As was mentioned, post and pre EQ are huge for 80's tones. You can afford to record a super bright sound because you don't have to stand in front of it and play. It's all for the mix. That said, JCM800 stock, SD-1 stock (with the tone bit past half for more cut), a tight but gainy pup (JB) and maybe an EQ for slight mid hump boost on the lead. The rest is hands.

Again though, EQ is the biggest factor to all these tones we love from the 80's. "studio magic" is called magic for a reason.
