i know u probably arent familiar with this one, and you cant really find anything to listen from this amp,
thought i promise to send some clips next week,
the best plexi sound i have ever heard is : BRUNETTI MILES CUSTOM RELEASE preamp.
end of story.

Superunknown, rocksta amps sound very good, just listen to van halen 1 and then listen to rocksta clips and then tell me whats missing, the answer is edge and gain.............

The Fortin Bones can get pretty close to the VH tone on the M setting with some low output pickups.
Or on the L setting if you've got a boost.

+1000 on this!!

Any number of amps, really. (Although some will insist only the amp THEY own does).

Jesus Christ, how close do you have to get? Who in the hell would want just that sound unless you were in a VH tribute band. Hey, I love it just as much as the next guy, but it aint my sound.

I've heard Pete Thorn get very close with a 5153. Close enough. God this whole debate gets tiresome.

Sorry, rant over.

And the fact remains that no matter WHAT amp you use, most of the VH sound comes from the player.

EVH's tone comes from a low-gain amp being driven WAY beyond any sort of rational limit and a guitar being pounded within an inch of its life by a guy with nothing left to lose.

No matter what kind of amp/guitar combo I play, I'm still just an engineer with a gear fetish.
I can get close, but I'll never get 100% there because I'm still not EVH.

Sorry.

There's a lot to be said for this

And secondly, to the OP, if you want the plexi tone, get a beat to shit circa 70's 50W or 100W Marshall head - simple. There's a ton of amps out there that can do this for you, but if it's 'plexi' you seek which is Marshall, than go for a Marshall.

I had a 50watt 75/76 JMP at one time and it sounded ok for AC/DC type tones and that was about it without
any pedals. It was ok at best. I much prefer the newer "Marshall Type" amps being offered by many modern builders for what my ears wanna hear.

A low gain amp such as a plexi cranked to the max will not achieve the gain-distortion that Ed achieved on van halen 1,people need to go back and listen to van halen 1 and then try achieveing that sound(van halen 1 sound) with a cranked plexi ,its not going to happen, ive tried it,I have owned many original late 60s plexis, its just not going to happen.

Sigh.... :aww:

1) buy a stock 12 series super lead or equivalent
2) convert the preamp to 2203 spec (cascade the first two stages, put a 10k on the second stage instead of the 330u/820)
3) lower the filtering (40uF mains, 16uF screens, 16uF PI, dual 32uF preamp.)
4) put in a LarMar PPIMV
5) Dime the preamp gain and master you now have and adjust the PPIMV to taste for overall volume....

Congratulations, you're browned for about $20-30 in parts and some soldering time + the cost of the stock Marshall or Metro you bought... In general this will work with any Super Lead style amp 100 or 50 watt - you're just doing a 2204 cascade on a 50 watt...
