What kind of music? I mean, I could recommend anything from a JB to a PAF to an EMG... Really depends on your taste.

Best pickups I've used have been:

BKP Black Dog
BKP Holy Diver
Duncan JB
Lindy Fralin PAF of some sort
Pretty nice recommendations here

I've got my Lesters loaded with:
BKP Mules (low output, beautiful sounding pups especially with a higher gain amp)
BKP BlackDogs (one of my fave mid-rich pups, very punchy, great in clean/crunch settings)
BKP Emeralds (in my triple pup '57 Black Beauty, all around very clear for clean to metal)
BKP RiffRaffs (probably one of the best "all 'round" pups on a maple topped/mahogany body/RW neck guitar)
Gibson Classic '57s (somewhere in between Mules and RiffRaffs)

Different tools for different tones.

MO BABY!!!
Glad to see you chiming in here Brutha.
How are things...you still livin' it up?

My favorites other than Gibson PAF's are Tom Holmes 450 (Neck), 455 (Bridge)

Lots of variables/choices there, Jazz/Jb, 498, 500, Bonamassa, Zhangbucker, kinda lookin myself for a 68CA, thinkin MCP Angel Dust, thought of the Aldrich as well. Good luck making a choice on that! Too many options!! Lots of great pickups out there.

I swear EMG 81/85 were made for Les Pauls, they just work so well in there. My #1.

That being said, I really like my SD Alternative 8 B/Jazz N combo in my LP Standard.

57' Classic Plus
Burstbuckers

Yes on both of these - the BB's are asymmetric so you have a bit more high end.

Very similar to these and also excellent are the SD Antiquities. Mid 8k A2.

These are incredible (especially low to mid gain) but are darn near unobtanium.

They work really nice for high gain too

Suhr SSH+ and SSV in the GMW/Gibson Les Paul. Sounds pretty huge to me

I have a Pearly Gates in my LP Classic that I've been happy with for the past 10 years.

Well, sure. They are fantastic all around...but you will hear the differences better without huge levels of gain - I probably should have said it that way. Same with any of the really well-made vintage style pickups (Rolph, Fralin, etc).

There is a reason EJ uses a DiMarzio HS-2 in the lead position (high gain violin tone) and a real vintage '54 or a '54 style low-wind A3 in the neck (clean and low-gain rhythm tones). I know this is apples and oranges but the concept is similar.

Thanks... Yes, I have a set 450 neck/455 bridge (among other solutions) in one of several LP's, and play with clean, crunch and high gain settings, through various amps from Fender, Cameron, Marshall, Boogie etc...

I really like the Sustainiac Pro in my GMW Floyd Paul, too.
