What are your favorite speakers?

I haven't played nearly enough speakers yet, but so far I'd say G12H30.

I've got two 1994 Mesa V30's that have been my go to, go back to speakers. I've tried a few other but I keep reloading with the Mesa's. I also like how they mix with other speakers, they just seem to compliment any high wattage speaker I mix them with. Especially Lead 80's. My .02

I love the greenback tone, but in the last year, I've been liking the extra bite and thick mids of an H30

The retro is described as having MORE top end than the v30 isn't it? What about beam of death or ice pic ear rattling? I think i am interested in gowing that route to pair a v30 type speaker up with 2 super v's.
The ice pick you hear from the V30's is from the abundance of upper mids that speaker has. That can get confused with treble, but the V30 lacks treble in my opinion.
The Retro has less upper mids than the V30 and more high end. Which works well in the speaker. I also find the Retro's lowend to be tighter at high volume levels.

This exactly. V30's are actually dark to me (in that they lack presence). Bright to me is the Classic Lead 80 or the G12H Anniversary. In fact, I'm surprised so many people prefer the G12H30........its one of the brightest, grittiest, cocked wah, tubby-sounding speakers I've ever heard. It can sound good with some amps, but sounds like shit with about 95% of them IMO. Many people will chime in and challenge this but I will have no part of it. I have tried them numerous times......new ones, old ones, Hellatone ones.....they all get on my nerves really fast.

The Retro 30 is MUCH tighter than the V30 across all frequencies. It kind of reminds me of the "VHT/Fryette" of speakers. They have a dry, crunchy sound to them. Whereas the Vintage 30's are "wetter" sounding and a bit more 3-D. But for personal reasons, I prefer the tight/focused sound of the Retro 30's. I've even paired up a Vintage 30 and a Retro 30 in a 2x12 and it sounded REALLY good. In fact, I might go that direction again soon. The Veteran 30 on the other hand, I'm not such a big fan of with high gain. Its really dark and loose and the midrange is kind of blurry. I currently have one in my Vox AC15 right now but I don't know if it will stay very long.

I was wondering if I was the only one that got this impression.....

I've heard them sound good, but agree with you; most amps don't sound their best with H30s.

Personally, I found the G12H30's (anniversary) to be gritty and tight in the bass. They had a bit of that high end rip my ear off but i think that is a celestion thing because since i've sold them, the greenbacks seem to do that to the high end as well. Where they did excel is in the cleans. I thought they were excellent for that.

So given that i will have two superV's ,.. what would you recommend to pair with those? I find that i like crunch and clarity without ice pick or "warmth" which more often than not is like "creamy" which means muffled and zero presence.Thick and crunchy for me please. any rock clips of these Freyette eminence speakers that aren't chugga chugga ? I need some hair nation reference to really gauge a speaker.

Can anyone compare the p50e to something?

a re-voiced V30 thats more open/cleaner sounding, more solid bass, less high end concentration.

Is fryette the only place to get the p50e?
It looks like it. $90 / each isn't bad at all!

I'm trying to decide whether to just buy the speakers or get the Deliverance cab.....

P50e and V30 for me. The mix of the 2 is crushing

What cab you using this config in if ya don't mind me axin'...??

V.

Well sir, I have the P50's in a VHT Fatbottom cab and the V30's in an Engl XXL (oversized) cab. Both are front loaded. I run both cabs together. I have recently thought about running an X pattern with p50/v30 mix. I have been too lazy to do it because VHT solders all their connections and it would require me to fire up the soldering iron (God forbid). :D I use to run an X pattern of v30's and G12K100's and it was pretty good. I really like what the P50's bring to the table. TThey seem to smooth things out when combining with the v30 cab. The one thing I can tell you is that the V30 is a much louder speaker than the P50 so maybe an X pattern is not the best idea but I may try it anyway.

Excellent reply - thank you

V.

As per the 'for rote' cut and paste blurb that noob_pwn entered a while back when discussing VHT [now] Fryette cabs, Steve Fryette explicitly states that the P50E's, while manufactured under the Eminence Umbrella, are entirely built from the ground up and tuned specifically to meet the requirements of his (Steve Fryette's) cabs - namely the Fat Bottom and the Deliverance. From there, the tweaks to the inner cab design were polished up, and the end result is a cab designed around a specifically made speaker, and a speaker designed around a specifically made cab.

This is all I know.

This and the fact I'm getting a Deliverance 4x12 loaded with P50E's in the next couple weeks.

Yeah, im also interested to know how these p50e's sound in rear loaded cabs...would they loose tightness?

As I mentioned before I'm just hoping their not fully broken in yet.

Pete, the 65w models you received are going to need 40-50 hours of stage/high volume playing (30w at least) before they're fully broken in. If you need instructions on how to do the variac break in (and have a variac), email me and I'll send them to you.
Thanks Jim. I'm definitely not to 40 hours yet. I've been running various pre-recorded guitar parts on a loop through the cab. But I've been doing it at very loud volumes and I can only take so much at one time.

Pete,

All J75s will be bassy. Neento mix in the M75s for the cut.

Brad
Not IMHO with my Soldano SLO. I replaced one J75 out of four with an an H55. More goodness.
