I am sure this has been discussed before but wanted more recent info from everyone. What compressors are you guys using, and also how many of you dont use one at all?

Don't use one. I'm a guitar player. What would I use a compressor for? Really?

Clean stuff? Country licks? Don't care for country guitar and never really play totally clean. Always have a little hair on the cleans so.....

Analogman Juicer. I've tried a few: philosopher's tone, keeley, boss cs-3, boss cs-3 monte modded, probably some others I can't remember. The juicer has been my favorite but they all had there own flavor.

Rothwell Lovesqueeze. Completely changes the feel of my XTC. Makes solos sing, especially in Plexi mode. Best of all it's completely transparent...

None. I spend lots of money to avoid compressing guitar tone.

Which are you using?

I use tube distortion to compress most of the time. But I do use a MXR for some stuff, like driving certain other pedals. But I agree with the post above .... in general I am avoiding compression.

I have a Boss CS-3 and Barber Tone Press, but neither are on my board. I rarely use compression. I might dial in the Distressor in the studio, but that's about it. The Boss and Barber pedals are nice though.

tone press. Using it with a Gilbert Detox as a cut. Adds kind of a mid-gain channel to my rig.

I have been very happy with my Wampler Ego Compressor. Very adjustable, quiet. I've tried about 11-15 compressors and this one was what I was looking for...

I remember doing some pretty heavy research on compressors not too long ago and it seemed like the Tone Press was the one to have.

I still haven't bought one, but I will eventually. I'm interested in using it for cleans with my Tele/Deluxe Reverb.

I have been looking into a new one to replace my old noisy DOD.The Barber and the Boss are at the top of the list. Carl Martin is good too.

i use a barber tone press, dialed in with 30% blend or so, usually on all the time, i like what it does to the tone

tc electronic nova dynamics - multiband studio quality compressor with a parallel blend in a pedal. It's the most transparent unit I've seen yet. If you want that squished effect though it was a stomp mode that is reminiscent of a dyna comp.

I use the Homebrew CPR. It's pretty quiet for a compressor, and does some nice gentle massaging to my clean tone when I want it.

Tone press is probably the best comp that I've ever played, and the Wampler Ego is a close 2nd.

I guess that I'm completely the opposite of most here. Up until a year ago, I had been playing in a classic rock/country band for the past 14 years. So I needed maximum squish. Was going for the Brad Paisley thing. I used a Visual Sound Route 66 to good effect for that. And for a brief fill-in period with my old band last summer I use a T-Rex Comp Nova to good effect for that. Outside of looking for that squished clean country lead tone, I never use compressors.

I've played them all it seems. Many listed in this thread are good, and I've owned and sold a lot of them.

But the best compressor I've ever played (because it smooths your signal without leaving any compressor trace) is the RAF Mirage. It smokes the rest, imo.

But when playing with gain, it's always important to only use a little. The best phrase I ever heard regarding compressor usage is this: "If you can hear the compressor, you're using too much."
