What do you consider the essential pedals?

I posted this on other forums, just wanted to see what different people think.

I'm not looking for anything specific, just something to play around with.

I'm not too experienced with pedals and wanted to know what would be some "mandatory" pedals that many guitarists use.

I know it is kind of a vague question but I'm not sure what to get.

I have a Maxon 808 in front and an MXR 10 band eq for the loop. I've used those for most of my amps and I mostly play higher gain metal.

I want to get a wah at some point but what else would you recommend?

I was thinking about a delay, reverb or compressor and to focus on the clean channel.

Currently, my pedalboard is vibe, wah, boost and modulated delay.

Whether or not any of those is "essential" will depend on what you're trying to play.

I could ditch the delay and boost and get by just fine, loosing the wah and vibe would change the overall feel of what I'm going for on certain songs so for me those are a little more essential.

I will always have in my board the following:

Boss CE-2
Xotic EP or Maxon OD
Phase 90
External tap tremolo (currently use a one off custom)
Delay (Boss or Strymon)
Auto return wah (either Bad Horsie or 535Q)
Volume Pedal (always used EB)

For me it's an overdrive or distortion pedal and a delay, I usually have amps with no reverb so that delay gives that slight depth and the overdrive to boost the gain.

To me the only mandatory pedal is a tuner. Everything else is to taste.

I took the OP's question as not what is the pedal minimum you would need to complete a gig but what pedals have consistantly found themselves on your boards over the years. Most of us could get threw a gig with just a tuner, some don't even need that, but I don't think it's what the OP was asking (though I could be wrong).

My current board is about 12 pedals & i use them all for the tones & textures in my current band. In reality though, i would say that there are really only 2 pedals i HAVE to have in any given situation with my current amp & rig. Tuner & Decimater noise gate because i play heavy rock with a high gain amp.

my board has a wah, tuner, overdrive, distortion, chorus, phaser, tremelo and a clean boost (LPB-1). We play a variety of music - classic rock, southern rock, country, blues and this combo covers it all.

Exactly, I should've specified sorry.

A tuner and noise gate would not be included. I plan to get those anyway.

Just really looking for something cool for the cleans. I guess a delay would be my best bet and maybe a cheap Joyo compressor or something.

I have been running a,

Timmy
Brown Rabbit
Hartman compressor
Malleko 600

Into a reeves custom 50

But I just finished a 2204 build and.... no pedal can do what it does.

Full circle.

For my clean I have an MXR custom comp, CE-2 chorus, and the Strymon delay. Many also use an EQ and Reverb but I've never really felt like I needed them.

For cleans definitely a Maxon compressor, a chorus, delay and reverb. And for the dirty sounds the od808 is always there, I'm also really liking my new Grind pedal and delay for leads. Just about everything in my sig. :)
