What guage strings do you run on your Les Paul?

I've been using .010 GHS Pro Nickels, tuned to standard, for a while and I like them. But I am starting to notice by the end of the night some slight pain in my left elbow and my hand. Starting to wonder if I should step down to .009's on this guitar or perhaps try .0095's for a while.

Anyone else go threw this?

I've never experienced what you are talking about...but I'm super paranoid so if I started to experience that I would call a doctor, not change string gauges

Definitely try the .0095's Randy!

On my LP's, i use .010's in Standard and E Flat.

However, I use the .0095's on my Strats if I'm playing in Standard Tuning, as the tension is higher with the longer scale length. Using .010's in Standard tuning on a Strat really ache my fingers after a few hours of playing.

If you're getting any aches/pains, drop that string gauge now before you get any further problems. Tendon problems are not fun!

Just a thought, but it could be the height of the guitar on your strap which is causing this.

I use 10-46 on my LP.

another 11-52 user here. Anything lighter feels too floppy for me.

D'addario 10-46 for me. Same thing on my strats. Generally standard tuning.

I use 0.009's on my traditional. It feels great but it's almost unruly, like there's not enough resistance. I may move to 0.010's....

I learned on 9's but I moved to 10's a long time ago since 9's would always break on me. I've really never quite gotten used to 10's and they still feel a little weird. oh well, life is a bitch

but yea, I'd see a doctor if it keeps up.

D'Addario XL 10's tuned one half step down. All my guitars are set up this way except two of them, which are a Fender Relic Strat with 10's tuned to A 440 and an 83 Kramer Pacer Deluxe with 11's tuned one whole step down. (motley crue tunes   )

How high is your action Randy?

10s on an LP with high action feel uncomfortable to me, but with medium low action it makes a world of difference. I also adjust the truss rod for very little relief too, to keep the action consistent along the neck. But to do that and not have buzzing issues, your frets have to be level.

I was a 10-52 user for years. Just switched to 9-42's and I love the feel. I guess old age is kicking in so so the heavier strings are going bye-bye...

I'll have to check it when I get home Dan. To me it feels pretty good, but I'm old school and like my action higher than most. This LP just got reworked a bit, and the tone of it made me instantly start selling gear so that I can acquire it from my drummer. It's a solid mahogany body from 1980 so it's heavy as hell but really sings.

I'm wondering if .0095's are the way to go for now. It's due for a string change anyhow and only going down half a gauge, I'm betting there would be little to no adjustment necessary.

I made the switch to 11's a while back for all my 24.75" scale guitars. I feel like it really "woke up" the wood, and the guitar is louder and resonates way more now. I'd have a hard time switching back.

On a side note, I played a friend's 25.5" Strat the other day, strung with 11's, and it sounded incredible. It sucks, but the reality of the situation is that bigger strings DO equal bigger tone, in my opinion.

For me, 10's on a Gibson scale neck tuned down 1/2 step feel like the same tension as 9's on a Fender scale neck tuned standard. If I tuned my guitars standard, then I would prolly try 9.5's as 10's do feel just a tiny bit heavy. I would deffinately use 10's over 9's though, as the 9's are just too light on a LP. I currently tune all my guitars D standard, so 10-52 suits me.

EB Regular Slinky (10's) for standard tuning, EB Beefy Slinky for drop tuning.
