What is a Cali? Jose?

When people refer to a Cali is it simply another name for a Jose?

or a Jose with some mods?

Is a Jose simply a modded 2203/plexi?

Where did the term Cali first come from?
 
The Cali is that Fortin thing, isn´t it, sort of a modernized José.

As far as I know the basic original José mod was to stick half a tube controlled by a separate gain knob in front of a 1959/1987 circuit, lean out the low end and put a 2203-style master volume on it. From there I´m not sure any two were perfectly alike. When people think of them today it invariably also includes the supposedly somewhat rare clipping diode option, and sometimes also the secondary "José master" that´s early in the preamp instead of back at the phase inverter.
