What Modules for Our Live Show Recording?!?

The show went ok I think. It definitely was not our best show and I personally had a really off night. But the proof will be in the pudding and we havent seen any footage as of yet.

I broke the A string on my Suhr during the 3rd song (one of our best which we really wanted good footage of...) and played the rest of the set with my Padauk N4 (loaded with Suhr SSH+). The tone still sounded crushing to me, but Ill be interested to hear the audio on the recording which is direct from soundboard mixed with 57 pointing at PA.

One thing to note. Those of you with EL34s are in denial. Even Nick (the most stubborn EL34 snob I know) admitted that my tone destroyed his (though his was still obviously very good). The EG5 was absolutely crushing that night. I hope it transferred well to the tape. Anyway, not to derail the thread and turn this into a tube thread since we have a TON of those... I just thought Id mention it.

Correction: It was a mono board-mix, blended with a shotgun condenser mic on top of the camera.

Don't woory about it guys, this shit happens. I can't tell you how many times. I don't want to get all "tell you this and that" about it. Try your best to do it again. In fact try to record and listen back as much as possible. Two things good come from that. 1) When you are recording and it counts, you're used to it ... no big deal, you can relax, it's just another recording. Not saying you guys choked because of the "red light syndrome' but here is a term for it for a reason. Happens to the pros too. 2) You begin to hear things when you record yourself that you were not even aware was happening. Noise in between songs, notes not bent to full pitch or over bent sharp. Little shit that you think you have down, but you don't. This is when you begin to realize those things matter. Any way you guys are good and you probably are aware of this stuff I'm telling you about already but hey, better luck next time, and like you said it could still be great when you watch it! How many times have we all played a show that we thought was great and people are all 'meh .. whatever" and they we stink up the place and people go "Holy Ape Fing Sh!t !!!!"

Edit: Oh yea and when you make it big time, I'll be glad to manage your band, you need an old fart like me whose been through the flames out the other side and has already heard 90% of all the BS people are gonna be throwing your way.

Dude..that sucks about breaking a string during the set . I don't remember the last time I broke a string. And I'm due for one, since I haven't changed strings in most of my guitars in...well I don't remember .

Which EL34's is Nick using? I'm curious to try out the GT E34L's. For me...the biggest tone I've ever gotten is definitely from my VHT 2/90/2. I love my Mod50...but man...there's something about the VHT 2/90/2 w/ 6550s that's just plain AMAZING! I really dig the Mod50 with a lot of tubes. Each for different reasons. But crank up that VHT...and it'll rattle your balls off!

Thanks Tommy and right on. You really do see what your performance is when watching back to tape so if nothing else it will be a good study for us on performance and parts that need work. I think there may be some stuff in there thats usable even still. We'll see. Dont get me wrong it wasnt a trainwreck by any means and weve had worse shows, but it wasnt one of those shows where everyone in the can feel that there is an IT that is going on, you know? And I flubbed some notes!

Eric, man I want some 6550s. Remember though, how many clubs can you crank up a 2/90/2 and not get kicked out? Seriously, I have a VHT UL and couldn't get it past 10:00 at gigs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am afraid I'd run into the same issue with a VHT 2/90/2. VHTS are LOUD!
I have heard Randall RM100s, Mesas, Marshalls, I had an H&K that was LOUD as well, others not so bad....but VHT.

I think I'd do best with the new to be released Egnater 1U 2x60

Well, first of all, this gig definitely didn't go as well as planned. As Matt said, we just didn't feel that IT factor at this show. I dunno if it was just technical difficulties, breaking strings, losing our flow, or just the fact that it was 1030 on a wednesday night and we worked a full day. But we've done alot better.

I'm still glad we got the videotape, because we're going to learn A LOT from watching that. I'm going to learn which notes were off when singing, and Matt is going to be able to admire his great looking guitars and deep knee rock squat poses.

The audio, suprisingly, turned out worse than expected. As I KINDA guessed, the board-feed was mainly ALL vocals. So when the mic and XLR feed were blended, it just does NOT sound even.

I'm going to have to see what I can do to EQ the audio to try to blend it and see what I can do.

Rich...you need to get some 6550s to try out...a 5751 or two to try in your BMAN . You just need to try this stuff out for yourself man, to see how it works for you. As far as the VHT 2/90/2 or the 2150. yes they are loud when cranked 100% or even 50%. But, how I personally run my rigs, you don't need to crank it that loud to get killer tones! I run my M4's volume at high noon. I run my VHT 2/90/2's master volume per side at 100%. But on my Lexicon MPXG2, it has a master volume out that affects the volume of the main outputs. That's what I change to make my tones soft -> loud. What's nice about the 6550s, is that the feel similar from lower volumes to higher volumes because they have more headroom than most other tubes. Therefore, I don't have to dime my amp to get that "power tube distortion" that everyone wants w/ a EL34. I personally don't like power tube distortion. I get the "feel" of my amp from the preamp, and want the power section to just take that tone and make it louder! That's not to say the 6550s are transparent. They aren't. But they are much more transparent than a EL34 or 6L6. They have great lows, warm, thick mids, and sparkling highs. They really do well across the frequency spectrum.

So honestly, yes I have an amp that runs at 90 watts a side. But that doesn't mean I have to crank it to 11 to get great tone. It's quite the contrary. The VHT power section just is the most muscular, yet versatile power section I've played to date. The Mod50's is second, but it has a different feel for sure with the Heyboer transformers. But it's a feel I really like.

Thanks for the info Eric. I appreciate the explanation on the VHT. Dude, I would love a rack set up like the VHT and M4, but I am betting that is way heavier than the Mod 50....so as a second ranked rig, the Mod 50 is pretty darn good. I also can't afford a rack right now.

I am darn curious to see how good the new 1U power amp will sound from Egnater. So many choices man but I try to stay with the lighter rigs these days, so the VHT/M4 rack may not be in the cards. Not even sure a 70lb RM100 is in the cards. Not that I can't do it, I just choose not to carry that stuff around. Now, when we get a new house and I have my own music room and recording studio, things may change.

I do want to try the 6550s for sure! As soon, as the extra cash is there - I will get some along with those preamp tubes for the Bassman. I wonder if the 6550s will give enough headroom to get me not wanting to try a 100 watter like the RM100. Time will tell.
