What would you buy if you want 80's/modern highgain British

I don't know about all the rubbish that went on, but must admit, I've found myself listening to a lot of Cameron CCV and Cameron Modded Marhsall tones recently, they sound huge and right up my street.

What's the best and perhaps closest alternative these days, given that I guess we can no longer buy his mods or amps.

Many thanks

I would get a Gutierrez mod on an 800. All tube mod with a metro zero loss loop. My all time favorite Marshall ever.

There are a lot of Jose type mods out there, some better than others. I have been in the room with a lot of them. I think my Gutierrez 800 is better, especially for thrash. But in the spirit of full disclosure,I am very partial to Brents work.

DiMarzio Super Distortions -> Boss FA-1/MXR Distortion/TS -> JCM800.

Or steel someone elses

You can get Mark's stuff, he's on Facebook, but I'd message EXPCustom (Jason) on here, he's sort of the middleman these days...

Really, wow! That's cool. Thank you, I will!

Thanks to the guys for earlier suggestions too, I think there's something quite appealing about a straight up Marshall and some pedals and mean pickups to get you there!

Marshall DSLs can be acquired for $450 - $550 pretty regularly. With a boost in front, you have that hot rodded pure Marshall tone.

I personally have a Friedman BE-100 and a Bogner Helios 50. I put a boost in front of these amps as well and this allows me many tonal options with the amp straight or boosted and both give that pissed off Marshall tone.

The BE100 can sound hot with the sat switch turned on and the same goes with the Helios on the hot input and 80s mode but for me I prefer a more open, not so compressed tone and to have the amps gain dialed back a little and a boost put out front.

With all of the modded or hot-rodded amps out there, the older I get it seems that I like a less gainy base tone and to have that tone boosted to give me the pissed off Marshall 80s type tones.

This is the route I would take.

I am not super keen on these types of amps but if Bray falls into this category I would be looking into those as well. If not rip off my balls and feed them to me.

Modded Marshalls : Dan Gower, Hermansson, Fortin, Cameron, Hopkins, etc... lot's of good guys doing great work.

Production amps in best Modded camp : Wizard, Landry, Friedman, Morris and few more.

Or... just throw a tube screamer or other OD pedal in front of a 2203/4... that is the sound of the 80's :) Lots of great amps out there that will deliver. Good Luck

If volume is not a concern, then an 800 with a Sd1/TS is REALLY tough to beat

Thanks, that list is exactly what I needed! I need to check Wizard amps out!

See I've been trying to find a good clip of what an 800 sounds like with a good boost with lots of chug and palm muted etc, but have yet to find one that convinces me that it's the right way to go...ideally, THAT is the solution that I'd like to have.

Thanks guys

Another vote for a 2203 or 2204 on your choice of boost pedal. I never played my SLO after starting to use a 2204 and an SD-1. Different pedals can really add different flavors to it (more low end, smoother top end, scooped mids or cocked-wah boosted mids, etc.). Just have to sort through some of the options and then you're good to go without the headache of having something modded or a $4k amp.

Sounds like the way to go, and is my preference, no doubt. I just hope it delivers the gain I need.

I'm with the 800 with an SD-1 of some flavor or another. Granted, if you want something more modern with the same flavor, you don't need to spend a fortune. Grab a DSL, throw some lower gain pre tubes in it (5751 for V1, 12at7 for PI), use a boost and keep the gain low for similar flavor. Or lose the boost and gain it up. The 800 will only give you THAT tone when it's at neighbors calling the cops levels, while the DSL will have a good master volume and give up the goods on preamp gain alone. Though being a Marshall, it will sound better louder.

But the sound of the eighties was SD-1->800, and later on 800s modded with gain boosts built in.

If you need more gain than use some active PU's, pretty much what Zakk has been using for years...

It doesn’t sound like any Cameron (thank god for that)...

The Wizard MTL gets my vote. Covers what you need.

Not a great clip but I did a bunch of drop D stuff with an SD1 here.

Man, that sounds so good. Makes me miss my old JCM 800.

Check out Bruce Egnater's Marshall mod, designed to sound and feel like a SD-1 in front of a stock 2203/2204 on the HI sensitivity input only (adds a tube stage), the LOW input becomes the stock HI so you can still use a boost pedal, and the mod is quiet, gets rid of the hiss. Great problem solver. It's called the Megadrive mod, was featured in the June '95 issue of Guitar Player Magazine.
