I haven't tried any sort of computer recording in about 10 years, so i'm really green on whats good as far as interfaces go.
Can someone recommend me a solid 2x2 usb interface from the current crop of I/O's?

I use the Tascam US2x2....cheap and solid

I also have the Audient (iD14 or something?) and it's more expensive but I like the Tascam just as much tbh

I really dig the Audient stuff. I got a Mac not a PC though, but I keep an iD14 in my backpack for portable recording/jamming/recording ideas when traveling. It's great that it's bus powered so I don't even need to carry around a power supply, just plug into the laptop USB, grab some headphones and a do the thing.

I have the Focusrite Scarlett 2i4. It's fine for my purposes, which is just home demos of new songs/ideas. I would prolly get something better if i was tracking for an album or any official type of release

Tascam US2x2
MOTU M2 or M4
Focusrite Scarlett 4i4

I like the Audient stuff as well. Good preamps and converters. A little pricey but they sound good.

The IK Axe I/O has sale right now that includes all of the Amplitube expansion packs. The Max version is pretty sweet. The interface and drivers have been solid for me for a couple of years now.

There are cheaper options from them as well. Some have different software bundles with MixBuss or T-Racks.
i'm not concerned about plug ins or amp models. i have my tones covered, looking to mic and capture said tones.
that spl crimson 3 looks sick! Too rich for me. i gotta research some of these more. thanks for the suggestions!

anyone tried the solid state logic ssl2+ ? is it any good, or did SSL just slap their name on some pos?

Audient sounds really great. Hardware is solid, feels great and form-factor is perfect. I have been using an ID22 for a long time on windows (don't know how it behaves on Mac). Ready to switch for something better at any time but haven't came across anything worthwhile yet.

Got an Apogee Duet for PC, been a few years now. Really dig it, the pres are solid.

Other things to consider is if you want 4 outputs so you don't have to unplug your monitors to reamp or have a hardware send. MIDI I/O is another. USB buss powered or not. Can't tell for sure but I think wall wart versions are quieter.
