Great amp. Had my 5150-II for 4 years fitted with custom quad of 2xEL34 + 2x6L6GCs. Smoking combo til I met my beloved Herbert. When it comes to sparkling cleans, Marshall-esque mid gain tone and over the top brutal crystal clear high-gain – no guitar amp comes anywhere close to the all mighty Diezel Herbert. A Herbert brutal package all-in-one - late... :rock:

The Wolfe Hellfire. That thing flat out OWNS. Completely unique and just brutal.

Only difference is my CH1 volume is @ 12:00, master @ 9:00 :)
 
Seeing as the word "new" is in here... I'm going to have to vote for something from the Fortin line up ;)

I've not played the new Hagen, I've got a Mak4 which kills BUT it's a preamp only and VERY dependent on the power section to make or break it, I've not played a Rhodes although I hear they're killer... I love my 20thA XTC, but that's not 'to me' a high gain head...it's like a juiced up killer amp, but not high gain. The VH4's been a around a long time, so it ain't new, nor is the Herb.

Of everything I hear from the Fortin higher gain department (like there's any other :lol: :LOL: ), it's all got this really unique KNOCK to it that sorta puts in a league of its own [to date], IMHO.

It's not new, but been fiddling with a Sovtek Mig 100h with yellowjackets and el84s. Great saturation with tight lows.

Sounds great through my Mesa combo at 8ohms;)

Makes me rethink my high gain setup. Or at least my techniques.

No contest for me. Any of the Peters amps. The controls actually work how they should, and are deceptively versatile. They have a unique, yet familiar, sound. They are among the best at lower volumes. As praised as they are, they are still underrated for build quality. They have a feel and response unlike any other high gain amps, and make you feel like your fingers are moving the speakers. And, James Peters is the best to deal with.
 
I would imagine the new Diezel Hagen will be the amp to own in 2011. From what little I have heard, it has a really mean growl to it and a modern version of the VH4. Stay tuned....as anything new from Peter is well planned, well laid out, all the parts are available and without delay. Routine operations for the Duetche machine!

In the Marshall-esque world, I'd have to say pretty much any KS Friedman mod or KS Marsha/Friedman. But if it's that detuned low end thing you seek, I played an Uberschall a few months ago that really had the deep yet tight low end thing going and blew my hair back. It was HEAVY sounding, even in standard tuning, and made me want to keep playing, although I was using it to test a wah. I bought the wah, and almost bought the Uberschall, but in the end had to withhold the $. It's too bad, because the Uber would have given me a tone I lack.
