A TS808 sounds really good in front. Boosting with an EQ ala GE-10 also brings the crunch. Other than that I'm also looking for more options!

Z Vex SHO kills in front of a Marshall (or just about any other amp).

I use some different Ibanez Tubescreamers that are all slightly modified somehow, I also got some Boss SD-1's I've modded. I also got a killer one made by Biyang (OD8x I think) that sounds perfect out of the box and required no modding and was mega cheap.

Oh yeah, I use a Ho Attenuator.

I got one and I like it. But I usually use my Ho for live cause I got footswitchable volumes. I use the Hotplate sometimes for recording and anytime I wanna slave an amp.

I use the Hot Plate often ..... I think it sounds best in the -4,-8 dB settings. This is enough to control amps in the drum-set volume range. I use the other setting .... but this is the way I use it most. You need to set up the amp different when using it on different setting. No big differences but fine tune the amp.

I like the results much better than using a pedal .....
I had about 50 overdrive, distortion, fuzz pedals .... most were stolen. I still have about 20. I had a roommate years ago that had over 150. It made up about half of his 300+ pedals .... I borrowed all of them at one time or a other.

About the only thing I use these days is a Zvex Fuzz Factory and a HomeBrew Electronics Plank Cranker it is a variation on a TS9. It has less of a mid hump and more bass than a regular TS9. It has a switch for TS9 stuff or distortion and a boost foot switch (wank) that adds boost and bass. It was a limited run of 30. I own the last one made/30th.
I also like a old Rat with some amps.

To be honest I do not use these much at all with any of my amps. I prefer my amps without much better most of the time. To control the gain I use the volume on the guitar often with all my amps.
I have never liked the sound of pedals all that much for distortion and overdrive. In general I consider it a compromise.... but it does offer some interesting colors.

I wish I liked the ppimv's, it would sure make life a little easier Did you like the SL with no master volume and just Hotplate and boost?

Yup... My '71 is so freaking gainy that it almost didn't need a boost if you cranked it to 10... It would knock crap off my desk... BRUTAL!!

I like both .... but with several amps the power section pushed is where the magic is. It is about tonal girth, harmonics and dynamics, just naming a few of the differences. A similar amount of distortion from the preamp or pedal well be more compressed and not react to my picking hand near as well. It is always mixing preamp and power amp distortion to get the effect I want.

I should also state that I much prefer a overdrive pedal added to poweramp distortion than preamp distortion, in the balance of things.

yeah man, for what I like it's hard to beat the od pedal into the poweramp distortion type sound. I tried all kinds of different amps over many years and the 1st time I tried the plexi cranked with a tubescreamer it was like - ok... that's what I've been looking for!!!!! I much preferred that to the JCM 800's I had.

Just cranked it up and tried a Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster, Carl Martin Compressor, TS808 and an OCD. For me no competition, the OCD was killin'. The 808 was nice, a little smaller and nasally sounding, cool I think if you want the 80's thing but the OCD was f'n huge, way more wide spectrum sonically and was more fun to play. It really suited my lead playing. I wasn't into what the boosters were doing at all personally. Didn't like the way the amp broke up when driven with more then what my Godwood was putting out.

I don't have a plexi but I use a BB preamp and Boss OD for my JMP.
OCD v4 is a great OD too.
