from this.. to what it is now? i.e. rubber band flubby flub

Who knows? There are still some great thrash like bands out there, but it is limited.

It's funny, I was just listening to Classic Thrash metal today on iTunes radio while doing crap around the house and was reminiscing on how the tones were so different back in the 80's. Much more to my liking but hey, what can you do. Guitarists are finally realizing their subconscious fantasy to be the bass player.

See, even though song and arrangement is killer I just don't like this kind of guitar tone. It's thick and throaty but there's just this layer of fizz and sizzle on the top end that gets really fatiguing for me. Is it a Diezel or Uber thing? Recto? I just think a JMP/JCM with a pedal will never be eclipsed for the greatest Thrash Metal sound. A lot of the newer modern amps are just trying to be too thick and HiFi and I've never heard a top end I like on any modern high gain amp yet.

I know you posted this as a response that not all new stuff is tuned to Z, rubbery nonsense and Exodus has been a better band in the last 10 years than they ever were in the 80's but I think my ears are time capsuled into the 70's and 80's, re: guitar tones, for better our worse.

I love the old school thrash tone but I also like the newer heavy modern tones.
They each have their place.
I grow tired of either after a while, and appreciate variety.

This thread kicks ass. It caused me to go on YT to find examples of "tone"  and I found awesome bands from the 80's I'd nevr even heard of before. Good times!

Here's a later 80's/early 90's band that I got to know in Boston when I lived there that never took off but was awesome.

the badassery kicks in about 1:07

aww, just for the hell of it

Not full on Thrash but good metal

I can't stand the old school scoopy tones. I still listen to stuff like sepultra but the tone is awful.

I love 80's hair metal tone, and I love 80's thrash (the real stuff, like Peace Sells/Puppets and earlier era), but 80's thrash tone/production was often pretty spotty (even though I still loved it for what it was). Modern thrash is probably about the only "modern tone" I'm liking these days, both old school bands that actually still play heavy (Testament, Overkill, Kreator) and modern ones that just kick ass (Havok, Municipal Waste, Hatchet).

I live all kinds of metal from the 80's hair/classic metal ala Dio, Maiden, Priest, Ozzy/Thrash and some of the Modern stuff. Some of the newer thrash bands like Havok and Warbringer kick ass!!!! Hell, Anthrax, Exodus, Overkill, and Testament are still churning out some great stuff. My fav is Nevermore though although not real thrash it has thrash roots!!! Too bad they are over!!

Peavey Triple XXX used on this record. I disagree about Exodus. They have been awesome since Bonded By Blood.

I think triple xxx was used on exhibit A,
but on this clip from recording of exhibit B gary says he use engl, and is the savage model.

Yes, you are right. I know it was a triple xxx on Exhibit A. I thought he got his Engl Savage after Exhibit B.

i know what you mean, i don't necessarily mind a meatier production , here's another new thrash band, mids/meat/peavey ? =0

//

i do miss those older bands/songs, the attitude/power shifted if anything

would be interested in hearing some of those old classics with better production/tones to see

such as this

I agree about how many of the newer bands tones being flubby and overly dark. Many of the newer high gain amps are voiced overly dark and bass heavy. With some I have to try to dial it out by running bass at 2 and raising the presence and trouble but it still not enough. To me, nothing beats the boosted or modded Marshall's used back in the day by many of the leading bands.

I don't dig the vocalists on the new young bands doing the Thrash thing. Too much carry over from screamo etc. A high pitched shriek is not Thrash to my ears. It's why I can't get into bands like Skeltonwitch and that band posted Warbringer even though the music is pretty good.

edit** Just realized I'm confusing Warbringer with someone else RE screatchy vocals.
