What do you usually think of? I like a very Clear, articulate, scooped, with really tight bass. I don't like thick low mids for my thrash tones.
So what do you thrash guys think is the ultimate thrash tone? I usually think of ride the lightning type tones, or master of puppets stuff.

Gary Holt has the ultimate thrash tone.

+ 1 also Mille from Kreator. His last couple recorded tones are sick as fuck. Andy Sneap probably reamped his and Gary's through the same rigs!

I also love Scott Ian's tone on Speak English or Die and also Dave's tone on Countdown.

Definitely RTL for me, KEA for a more "punk" approach to thrash tone, but I also really dig Anthrax's sound from STD and ATL which is very tight/polished and scooped, not as loose/raw as KEA. Slayer's RIB tone I also love and the mids are definitely not scooped on that one.

When I saw Kreator several years ago they were using 5150's. Opened up for Napalm D (Recto) and both them and Napalm sounded incredible. Danny Herrera is one of my favorite drummers in metal period.

I hate to say it because I will probably be flamed but.....When I think of thrash I think of AFJA :D Also Scott Ian on Speak English Or Die was a good pick, the tone on that album is so brutal and one of my all time favorites

Ride the Lightning! That is my all-time favorite thrash tone.

Those are all players with great tone mentioned above. But when I think thrash, I think of shittier tones. Like DRI, Suicidal Tendencies and Vio-lence.

Mmmm...good stuff

My point being, I dont think the sounds of the "Big Four" represent the sounds of the genre. Most thrash bands had shitty tone IMO - but I love it :D

Mustaine's tone on Rust in Peace.... Holy wars...The punishment due...... Just love that tone...

for me it would probably be the 80s metallica tones Anthrax, Megadeth and Slayer, but essentially what the OP said, and let's pop some videos of other notable bands=0

Besides the big 4

I always liked the guitar sound on Sacred Reich's Independent

I always liked the guitar sounds on Exodus Fabulous Disaster

Gary Holt... Exodus's guitar tone is ballin' son! :D

Gotta thank Andy Sneap for that one ;)

Thrash tone is in the hands as well. Need not more be said about Mr. Holt.

big Sacred Reich fan here

Megadeths rust in peace has a perfect tone for that album. Ride the lightning is a killer one as well. I like a lot of the tones testament had over the years as well.

Whenever we want to play some thrash I try to set my gear to sound like Ace of Spades. Maybe not prototypical thrash, but it works right.
