Last night one popped into my head that's kind of out of the box, Chuck Schuldiner. Even though Death is kind of grouped in with other death metal bands I always thought of Chuck as being a thrasher  I still have individual thought patterns on regular rotation

Gary Holt has the ultimate thrash tone.

+1 ...i agree with the little hide 'n seek bear! :D when i think 80's pure THRASH,i always first think of EXODUS! KREATOR & S.O.D. come next

I love all the tones mentioned. But I think Scott Ians tone has one of my favorite tones for thrash! :D

nothing to add that hasn't already been said......

well, maybe add Dimebag. :p

but yeah Gary has MONSTER tone, with or without Andy Sneaps help. :D

Dimes tone on far beyond driven and great southern trendkill

This is an awesome video for a quick run through of some classics. I think there's more vids that continue on. There's a stupidly long intro and the riffin' starts at about the 50 sec mark.

Keep al the killer ol' school vids comin'. This is as much fun as my punk nostagia

This is new to me as I didn't keep up with Annihilator after Alice but the tones and writing on this are pretty amazing.

Ride the Lightning (especially the title track) set a bar that was never surpassed. Fabulous Disaster may have equaled it though.

No way I can pick a favorite among Exodus, Pantera, Overkill (Horrorscope), Testament (Legacy), Forbidden, Sacred Reich (Surf Nicaragua!), Anthrax, Sepultura (Beneath the Remains), old Metallica, SOD, Kreator (Coma of Souls), Dark Angel (Time Does Not Heal), etc etc.

Love it or hate it, I also can't help but think of Slayer's Reign in Blood.

Besides the obvious early Metallica tones + 1,000,000 to Gary Holt. He is the Exodus guitar player I wish Metallica would have gotten...

I love overkills tone on Wheelz

Does anyone know What Gear overkill is using on ReliXIV?

my personal favorite thrash tone, of course in my opinion its all about the foundation the bass gives the guitars (especially in megadeth) ..Dan Lilker is a giant.

So true about the bass. I think a lot of players now are trying to get the low end they hear om a record just out of the guitar rig and they wonder why the band sounds indistinct or muddy. Let the Bass do the heavy lifting and have the guitar sound mean in the midrange with just enough beef to handle solo rhythm breakdowns. It's a big reason for me why AJFA is hard to listen to at length. I miss the depth of a proper band mix.

When listening to just the rhythm guitar track for ...And Justice For All's songs (say Dyers' Eve for example), you can really hear how hollow it is due to the lack of midrange. The bass is turned up to try and get some fullness, but it doesn't really work. The only positive thing about the absence of midrange is that it emphasised the edginess and crunchy distorted harmonics of the treble frequencies, to get that nasty, raspy, evil razor-sharp sound. Still, what's the point of sounding razor-sharp if it doesn't really cut through the mix? It's like a paper cut- yes it will slice your skin and sting, but it without any mass behind it it won't chop your finger off.

I don't personally think of the following as a "thrash tone", but maybe it could be considered so:

(I hope the clip loads...)

There's barely any bass in the guitar tones, but just enough so it doesn't sound light. But there's more mids than a strangled cat yowling down a telephone! I love it- the guitars have a Nazgul-like evil throaty screech with plenty of top-end crunch, and the bass guitar & drums keep it solid- together it sounds awesome.

AJFA has Bass boosted and Mids scooped all the way out. I have flemming ramausenns notes from AJFA somewhere on my computer. I'll try to post them. And I can get AJFA's tone practically perfect on my boogie taking out the low mids and scooping the mids, and Having the bass almost full on the EQ.
