Where do you keep your guitars?

In the car, in the bedroom, in the studio, at rehearsal, in the living room, at the office... Anywhere.

They are not cigars.

If they start that "ooh I need to be kept at this and this temperature", I don't want them.

I also like cracks and nicks. Ash on the top of the amp head. Scratches on the tolex. The lot.

My les paul is sitting in its case leaning against our snake tank about five feet from me, my explorer is in its case downstairs in my jam room (as is my Martin acoustic), Ibanez is hanging on the wall down there.

I tend to keep the more expensive guitars in their cases. I don't mind dings and scratches, but I do want them to last me a long time... and my house is a danger zone for anything remotely breakable. One of my dogs has destroyed a Jem before, for example.

As or my jam room... if I'm jamming I swap around on stands and wall-hangers, but if I have a case they get put away after it's all done.

All of them (5) are in my walk in closet on a 5 space guitar rack. No issues whatsoever. No cats/dogs/kids to knock them over.

And Hold it. I have Probe in each of my cases that send data to a master weather station... So I can watch each guitar.

No... Unfortunately I'm not kidding! LOL! Yeah I'm real OCD! Like that with everything.

But it's the only way you can know exactly what temps, and humidity each guitar is without even being near it.

Puts my mind at ease, and like I said... Since taking care of my guitars like this I've had ZERO neck, and going out of tune problems.

Absolutely in the cases, They support the guitar properly, and help maintain the humidity envirionment.

All The Cases in the same room... So I can more easily maintain temp/humidity. I run a De-humidifier in the Summer, and a Humidifier in the Winter... trying to keep temp and humidity @ 65~75F and 35%~45% humidity... After a while the Case SOAK UP THAT RATE OF MOISTURE.. And Hold it. I have Probe in each of my cases that send data to a master weather station... So I can watch each guitar.

Once the case has absorbed 40% humidty for months... It HOLDS IT, for a while! like a big sponge. So If I bring the case in a dry room let's say 15% the probe will still read 40% and slowly get drier (lower), after a couple of days...

That's why you want them in the cases... It's a stable envirionment!

Just as a testament to this... My guitars NEVER need a neck adjustment, and the NEVER go out of tune!!

What happens when you gig them when the stage is hot? They're not gonna hold their tune as great once that occurs.

That said, I don't really get keeping guitars in cases. In fact, I don't 'get' hard cases, period. What's the point of them? They're too heavy to seriously carry the guitar in for any length of time and don't offer enough protection when compared to a flight case.

Just my opinion.

In cases. Acoustic and one electric under the bed. One electric in the living room (behind my amp, safe from the kids). One in my rehersal space. Haven't had any issues either.

Wall hangers, 5 at a time. No discolouration?! Ever.(I have heard of such a thing happening. But not with my string swing hangers) My living room looks like GC! :D

I never made it a point to fully remember the details since I dont use them so im not 100% on this, but certain stands/hangers use a covering (might have been the rubber) that I heard may react with certain finishes ( If I remember correctly it was nitrocellulose) over a period of time. Not sure how accurate that is. I could have heard bad info or I may not be remembering correctly.

I heard that too, but never had it happen. I put rags around the stands to try to prevent that....

Well, its really not open to opinion...we're dealing with facts here. You're right on with your first point...there's really no way to account for a significant temperature change from case to stage...you simply have to let the guitar adjust and continue to tune it until it "settles in".
But your second point borders on lunacy...you don't get the point of having a hard case? You don't gig much do you?
A good hard case (not a flight case) offers way more protection than even the best gig bags. Ironically I've seen 2 guitars get backed over by a vehicle after loadout...one was a Charvel bass in a padded gig bag and the other was a Strat in a G&G hardshell. One ended up with a splintered neck, the other was completely intact...care to guess which was which? In fact, aside from some marks and apparent wood cracks underneath the tolex the G&G case was still ready for action. Additionally, your guitar is much safer in a hard case if you ever have an unexpected "equipment shift" on the way to/from a gig/rehearsal/etc...I think we've all probably run into that.
Finally, as has been mentioned, a hardcase acts as a little "environmental shell" and actually protects the guitar from changes in temp and humidity, thereby enhancing overall stability...especially helpful for guitars with thin and/or unfinished necks.

4 of them hanging, rest in their cases. I use "Off the WAll" hangers and I toss a microfiber cloth over the hanger itself so I dont have to worry about the hanger marring the neck or anything like that...I sit here all day in my office working and grabbing one every chance I get...

I use these http://www.herculesstands.com/guitars/GSP38WB.html#

I have used them for about 6-7 years, and 0 problems. They are in my loft which is in the center of the house, no direct sunlight causing temp changes, or fading in that room at all. I have all three of my electrics on hangers, and my wife's bass is on one as well. I live in a dry climate, and use a whole house humidifier. I keep it around 35% year round. I also make sure that my rosewoods boards get oiled when they need it which is about once a year at the most. My tuning, and necks are very stable especially considering the chinooks we get where I live where the air pressure can really jump for a few days, and the air gets very dry. I do keep my acoustic in a case, but I don't play acoustic very often.

I view my guitars, and amps as art work when I am not playing them. The room they are in is completely mine to decorate, and it is all music stuff except for one painting. I hate looking at cases, but walking up the stairs I see my amp, and cab. Once I get up stairs I see the guitars just begging my to pick them up, and play.

I like mine out so I can grab any one I want at any time. If I kept guitars in their cases I would only have 1 or two guitars. I/m not as anal as some of you guys and don't see my guitars getting too far out of whack. I never had ant discoloration from off the wall brand wall hangers but have from the rubber tubing on floor stands. Even guitars kept in their case will need an occasional tweak here and there. Its not like I keep my arsenal outside. They are in my studio that has no natural light from outside (windows covered with Auralex foam) and a pretty consistent temperature and humidity. AC or heat 24/7 365 and I never open the windows in that room. I live in Dallas TX and really we open up the windows on the first floor to air it out on occasion when its cool enough we have fairly low humidity levels here. Weather wise it is either too hot here or too cold we never go without AC or Heat.

+1 on the Hercules, I've got 8 of them, all loaded with guitars - they work great, lock the necks, and zero issues with this rubber-vs-guitar finish worry.

They rock,
Mo

I use these hangers made by Hang'em High Guitar hangers. You can hang them at an angle on the wall without hanging them by the headstock.

They also have Nitrocellulose-safe hangers too.

I keep them on the wall in my climate controlled music room.

I keep my Suhrs in their cases next to our bed, the Charvel San Dimas is out and around and the other stuff, my bass, acoustic and home-built are on wall hangers next to my computer desk.

In a big pile in the back bedroom. Some in cases some out...some hanging and some in the closet. I can hardly walk in the room. I really need to get in there and organize my shit....
