Where to get a custom guitar built

I thought Blackwater was having trouble delivering guitars?

Honestly, I'd tell someone to order a custom guitar from: nowhere. It's fine with Suhr and Anderson and Kiesel etc. But a true custom from a small shop? Soooo many bad stories.

Going through a dealer, like Destroy All Guitars, can help because of the builder flakes in theory the dealer would have the deposit.

As good a builder he is, dont expect a guitar from his this decade. I sold a spot after a two year wait at the end of 2014. That build still hasnt started yet.

I was going to say, I asked him about a build before I bought my Mayo and he told me
He wasn't taking orders right now.

If you have the coin the best experience I have had so far has been ordering Tom Anderson through a dealer or even contact them directly with questions , there customer service is outstanding. Watch out for small builders unless they have outstanding feedback.

I had Splawn make me 2 guitars. One was painted by Jason Oberly and it turned out fantastic. That being said I would not recommend Splawn for guitars. My spec sheet was not adhered to and I was very disappointed in my last build.

For me it would be Luxxtone or chubtone for another custom build.

Gene Liberty is a pro's pro luthier with a humble streak and his work is amazing. He's also a lefty and he built a beautiful V for a friend of my daughter. His website is not much for bells & whistles but his ability is great. Doesn't cost anything to call him and chat about guitars & such to get an idea about him. Price? Don't know, I've heard he is very fair. I'm having him do some work for me when I get over there, and I have several friends that have taken guitars to him for years & still do.
