What up Kage? Miss you bro!
This may be a little different than what you're asking but I felt it was noteworthy n general.
I used to put my wah first in my chain (Dunlop DCR-2SR) but last year I did some experimenting with the rig because I was never happy with my wah tone and I've found that for me, my wah HAS to come after my 808 set as a boost which is now first in the signal path.
With wah first into the boost, the Maxon compresses the bandwith of the wah making it extremely narrow sounding and all dynamics are lost. After the boost the wah reacts as it should!
Hey Joel!! long time man, hope all is well!!! Ive always run the wah ahead of everything( especially dirt boxes of any type) and preferred it that way. The issues that you had with the wah first happened to me with wah after dirt... However, Ive been listening to a bunch of different things lately and one guy whose tone that I dig, Philip Sayce, has been running his wah after his Fuzz face for a couple of things and it sounds amazing. I think the trick is lowering the drive and uping the volume but in the end, its really about what works for you and appeals to your ears...
One cool thing that I found and am going to use it in my rig is this thing called a Flip-Fopper. You plug any 2 effects in your chain into it and with one button stomp, you can reverse the order for different tones. Its a very simple yet cool idea and Im going to use it between my fuzz and wah....
