I've been playing for nearly 30 years and reached the pinnacle of alternate picking a long time ago and never really wanted to sweep. Then I discovered I can play the same type of licks, but faster and cleaner with economy picking. I sorta understand the basics of how it works but I'd like some links to a good super in depth "idiots guide to economy picking" tutorial with some licks and tabs so I can really work this up and incorporate it into my playing. My chops are coming back after being buried under a lot of rust by just dedicating a lot of time to practicing my favorite 80s solos but I think economy picking could really help propel me to the next level.

When I was a teen trying to figure out picking, I thought that if (for example) I had down stroked the D string and the next note was on the G string; it made ZERO sense to lift my pick up, jump over the G string just so I could upstroke it (ie alternate picking). What a waste of motion, my pick was right there! So I tried REALLY hard to never ever do that. Doh!

Decades later I tried really hard to switch to alternate picking...because Paul Gilbert. I did improve a little bit but I think it was because I was practicing so much at the time. But I would still get tripped up. So I decided that after ~35 years of picking a certain way that trying to change now was just not gonna ever be fluent. So I'm back to economy. I'm only mentioning this because, at least for me, going back and forth between the two just confuses my muscle memory.

I would be surprised if Troy Grady hasn't talked about this at length but I can't point you to a particular lesson. But that dude has got the equivalent to a PHD in guitar picking.

I've seen some of his stuff and holy cow it's insane. But everything I've looked at so far didn't really seem to explain it at the most basic levels. Maybe I just wasn't finding the right videos from him.

Dude order Economy Picking by Rick Graham . His lessons literally make lesson solos from popular songs super easy . I’ve ordered his 20 licks thing too . After a couple months of practice I felt like a better player , on a whole new level. Can’t say enough good things about his lessons
