i've been messing around with running mine on 25 watts through a jet city 12s cab. i think it helped tame some of the harshness i was hearing in the highs when running through the celestions in the 1960.
i'd really like to crank it up a bit more to be sure.. but i'm currently living in a one bedroom upper in the middle of town. i think the neighbors would complain about that.
the good news is that i'm trying to close a deal on a house in the country. i hope to be able to return to doing something that resembles "normal" for me by the start of next year. :)
a friend of mine said to me following my divorce " given what your hobbies are you should find a place in the country because wherever you go there goes the neighborhood."  he was right. :D a cranked amp of even 10 watts at this altitude in a residential neighborhood populated by retirees and families with small children? the cops would put me on speed dial.

Oh man. I don't know where you live, but I do understand. I live in an apartment downtown too. I hate to hear your going thru a divorce. That always sucks.. I've been there done that a couple times.. Anyway, good luck man! Interesting about the cab and harshness.. I've not tried one, but the video sounds great someone posted on here!

Peavey XXL. They can be had cheap. Put it through a good cab and it's one of the best SS amps I've heard. Wide range of tones in it too.

Hey IplayLoudly.

I have a Peavey backstage or something that I love the tone of, and it has the same technology as the Peavey XXL I guess, but it's not enough Gain, but of course, that's just a practice amp.

Do you think the XXL has enough gain to do metal and 80's metal, glam, and blues and ? I ask because I'm trying to find a solid state head that will do everything from cleans to metal and 80's metal especially..

I've seen those heads cheap and would use one in a minute if they're good? Do they make them or can you find them that are made in the states or ?

Thanks man.. I really appreciate that..

Absolutely. The "Ultra" channel has tons of gain. I don't think they make them anymore but there are tons of them out there. Easy to find. I actually wish I still had mine.

Here is a decent youtube video I found...

Hey, that video was a good one. It sounded great too on the vid thru my killer earphones..
I'm going to have to keep an eye out for one!

Thanks
Tim

thanks for your support. we still get along just fine. we just don't belong together. it's more like a european divorce. they tend to be more civilized about things like that than they are here in the states. at any rate i did get good news yesterday. i close on my new house at the end of the month. then i have to move again.. which also sucks.
i did notice in the video that he was playing through an eminence v12 loaded cab. that's sort of why i'd like to crank up the 12s cab since the jet city speaker is based on the eminence legend. the 1960 cab has g12t75's which tend to scoop the mids a bit in favor of more highs and lows. i've tried it with a vin 30 as well.. but prefer that with my orange micro terror.

The Randall RG100 ES and the different variations are cool amps and capable of some great tones.
Dimebag got some great sounds out of them but their biggest drawback is they are not very loud compared to a tube amp.
The 100 watt Randall RG100 amps are nowhere near as loud as a 100 watt tube amp. I regularly play a Randall RG100ES the type that is covered in grey carpet and I boost it with either a furman PQ 3 or just a clean boost and it is great fun to play . But the volume lets it down badly which just down to it being solid state. A friend of mine has a 100 watt marshall MG and when we play together even with a heavy handed drummer his little marshall MG head even though it is solid state can easily keep up with volumes the but the Randall cannot.

You must have your treble knob pulled at all times or your amp is fucked, cause that's not true at all. The Randall RG100ES heads i've owned more than held their own against 100 watt tube heads and in some case were even louder and very cutting. I don't ever need to turn mine higher than 3 on the master to keep up with most drummers, 4 with an exceptionally loud drummer.

As far as the original post is concerned i'd recommend any of the older Randalls with a boost, or an Ampeg SS/Vh series. They are all exceptional at getting the sound you want.
