Alex Lifeson from Rush. He had really great tone and then it got thin.
Just listened to ‘spirit of the radio’ and man..
Goosebumps!!
I think the last album I had by them had the song ‘roll da bones’
Which I loved!

Roll the Bones, the one with the rapping part in it? I would say it is for sure, the best Rush song of all time. That rapping just added that street cred that Geddy Lee always had, but just magnified it.

Lifeson's tone has never been the same on any two albums. Roll the Bones was all single coil guitars through solid state GKs. In the last 10 years it's been Les Pauls through Plexi-style tube heads. Night and day.

Adam Jones from Tool

You meam now? Last time I saw them was 2013. He was still using his recoding gear, Superbass and blueface Diezel. His tone was excellent. His tone was at it's best around the early 2000's when he was using the Mesa, Diezel and Marshall.

I think recently he has been using reissues or replacement amps but would like to know why you think this and when you heard his tone last?

He did some rap gigs under the name G unit if I recall.

Just a quick opinion.
I know lot of guys say Lynch’s tone has gotten worse thru time.
While I love George his tone is all over the place. Guess I am still reliving Back for the Attack and Under lock and key. Or maybe it’s just that all the YouTube vids popping up etc.
Any other guys in your opinion who’s overall tone seems to slide?

Real question is Dan, is your tone getting worse? I would think not with all those awesome amps you used to play through!

Nah man my tone is probably the best. It’s been!!

Lately it’s been the Engl Power Ball Crunch channel.
That Amp just brings the fire baby!

I Don't know if his tone has gotten worse but I miss Joe Bonamassa using Marshalls.

Came to post this. Don't dig his stripped down blues crap that he's been doing the past several years. His Beacon Theater tones were badass. Have had the chance to see him in Cheyenne and Denver the past couple of years and passed. Old school blues not my thing. That reminds me... I need to check out the new BCC album.

That was his late 80s to 90s tone. His tone on Counterparts, Test For Echo, and Vapor Trails weren't thin at all. Pretty huge in fact.

I think Yngwie's tone peaked on Trilogy, although I'm only going by the recorded examples of it.

He had some awesome tones on Odyssey, Fire and Ice, Seven Sign, and Magnum Opus. Maybe not Rising Force and Marching Out, but damn good. I saw him last June in Vegas and his tone was pretty good. But I was 5 feet from him... so it was all amp tone and no PA.

John Syke's tone seems to have peaked with Blue Murder. But then again... I can't remember the last time I saw/heard anything from him. Probably when he was fronting Lizzy.

I've always missed Petrucci's tone on the earlier DT albums. Just isn't as fluid and doesn't cut nearly as well anymore.
