who has had a blues jr before? How pedal friendly was it? It seems like a nice little amp. Wanted to ask those of you with some mileage on one

I had one and had it modded by Billm...it was a smoking little amp and I was able to rehearse with drums and the whole band...it was loud enough as long as the room isnt too big.
SD-1 and a Deep Blue delay in the front and it sounded really good.

great for pedals if you defeat the MV..its a great amp that way.

It's a good little amp and should take pedals well. Fender amps typically do. If you do choose the Blues Jr., go for the tweed NOS one. I demoed a black tolex floor model (Blues Junior II) and it sounded like crap, potentially from abuse. The new black tolex Blues Junior III is decent with the Eminence speaker, but the tweed has the superior Weber. I had a Texas Red one with a Celestion 30 that was decent, but had been gigged a lot and developed a low buzz that drove me nuts. I had to return it. The tweed is definitely the way to go, though! The spring reverb is very nice too.

The "texas red" you speak of is the same series they did with the hot rod deluxe and deville? The Blues junior III I actually like more than most people. Is the tweed version still a pre III circuit or did it get the circuit upgrade as well?

Gearmanndude uses one in a bunch of his demos:

I'd be interested in trying one of these out as well.

If you're looking at a Blues Jr. you owe it to yourself to also look at the Crate V15/30 series. I think these sound better than the Jr's and they don't go for as much cash usually. You gotta deal with taking some shit for the Crate name, but it's well worth it for the tone. Takes boosts well and the effects loop worked fine for me. No issues.

The early ones were all USA but later switched to Vietnam production. Just avoid the V18 and V33's. Those are not good.

The blonde tweed Blues Juniors sound fucken awesome.

Clearly tone is in the Tweed

That and the Weber that's inside the tweed. Offhand, I'm not positive which speaker is in the blonde. If I had to guess, it's the standard Eminence.

Sorry, check that. The speaker in the tweed is the Jensen, not a Weber. The Weber is in my Champ. As far as I know, the electronics are all the same. The difference is in the covering and the speaker itself.

love the blues junior. i gig with 2 in stereo for one of my groups (acoustic guitar, percussion player , and myself so a diezel/rhodes rig is a bit of overkill!). cool little amp and loves pedals

Fender must laugh all the way to the bank every time some mook buys one of those pieces of shit. Small boxy tone is your thing, then the BJ will float yer boat. Junk.

Wow! I couldn't disagree more! Different strokes I guess

They are a good pedal platform. Changing the stock eminence speaker to something else tends to help them. The Eminence speaker was described to me as "rugged" meaning designed not to blow but not necessarily the best tone. Definitely not the same Eminence speaker you would buy if you buy an Eminence replacement speaker. The volume gets loud rapidly as you turn up the master volume knob, up to about 4, then it doesn't really get that much louder between 4 and 11 or whatever it goes to. They are plenty loud for most uses. Reverb is pretty good but it's a short tank to fit in the small amp. They tend to be biased hot. Mine ate power tubes. Pretty good amps. Not really great IMO.

IMHO the Blues JR is a mediocre "practice amp" at best and no good for gigging. Everyone seems to want to heavily mod this amp, including Billm mods, tubes and speakers, so the only advantage is it's SIZE and not it's SOUND. This is one of the few pieces of gear I was happy to part with. Combine the cost of the amp with the cost of the mods and instead get a better amp to begin with ...I did, and any of the following are better than a Fender Blues JR: my Fender Blues Deluxe RI, Fender Twin Reverb RI and Peavey Delta Blues 115.

Seems like what I've seen is that the Pro Jr. is a bit more recommended around the internet. For what that is worth.

I have one and feel it's too loud to be a good practice amp and too small to properly handle stuff with the band. Sure....it takes to pedals well....but it also needs pedals to get anything really worthwhile. In a word, it's "OK".
