Mr. Dumble said it best: "The more fragile harmonics, can survive in a vacuum tube, where they seem to be eliminated or squashed, in a solid state crystal lattice. "

didn't sell it all but had the 2 .

I was really really excited .I Got it went through the presets and thought most were something I would never use.
Then I had to buy 180 headphones to get a good headphone sound, then there was the power amp and then you needed a controller.
So the initial outlay of 2200 is sure not where it ends

After one particular long tweaking session .My wife came home and said Wow,I think that the worst sound you have ever gotten.
It was definetly user error ,but the thing was
My Baron is just plug cable into guitar and go, and hour later your fingers are sore from playing.
Axe fx wire this cable . change this parameter ,upload this and 3 hours later you have a headache from looking at a computer screen.

Don't get me wrong, I think it has a purpose ,In the end for me it was too much .I would certainly be intrested in and AXlite and others have mentioned, scaled down effects amps and cabs .
but I don't need 25% of the stuff the Axe has.

+1

had the standard, and while it was a nice jump compared to the POD HD i had before, after hours of tweaking and still things to try i had dialed in some tones i quite liked, for low volumes at home sounded great, start to crank some volume in the practice room, those same patches didn't quite sound so good, there is the whole FRFR thing to consider as well which is yet more cost to the table, but between that and plugging into some pedals and a tube amp and have that instant gratification and imo a nicer tone the choice was quickly made

a cool device in any case, i'm really curious how the next even more realer than real tube amp sim model thing device will sound

The Axe Fx is a great way to demo a lot of amps that I would otherwise never be able to afford. I owned a few of the amps that it modeled and it did a pretty good job and getting the gist of it.
I finally realized that I really only use 2 sounds and maybe a solo boost so any good clean/crunch head is all I need.

those three items are all in all not that large, and if your band can't make room for 1 single 4x12 in your trailer, then you guys need to have a talk. because thats bullshit.

Haven't read the rest of the thread yet, but wanted to quickly chime in here. As I was reading the OP's post, this is also raised a red flag for me. Band's gear should come first, anything else should be secondary.

I sold it all for an Axe II and Matrix. It was a really cool piece of gear and I could get some great tones out of it The issue I ran into was that of longevity. When I looked at the Axe I saw a computer that needs a long series of updates and would at some point end up being replaced. Then the Axe III would come out and I'd once again be caught up in the endless upgrade cycle iPhone, iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, 4s,5 and on and on. I decided to buy amps that have the tone I love knowing that years from now they will still have the same function and sound. No upgrades, no software, just change the tubes. I ended up selling the Axe II and Matrix buying a PT100, Bogner GF45, and VH4 and I have more options than I have time to play. That being said, I am not a professional musician so the need for a single unit with maximum versatility is not a requirement. I can see how the Axe would be a godsend piece of gear for people as it really sounded good and had an insane amount of options.

my $0.02

i record at home, don't play out at all.

the axe fx increased my quality recording/composing time 100%. Now I can play any hour of the day and am very satisfied with the recorded tones. I'm always noodling with the axe and Logic throwing together new ideas. VERY FUN.

Sure the real deal is optimal but is also a real headache many times. Plus after 25 years of plugging away my ears don't need an amp pounding them into submission anymore.

Ya this sums it up for me. I've been playing more with the eargoggles on, making tunes, laying tracks, throwing down ideas. But there's simply nothing that comes close to cranking up my Hagen, Mak4, 20thA or VH4 through real tubes through real speakers with real power. It's simply a different kettle of fish.

But ya, from a desktop recording point of view? The Axe-II can't be beat. I also think the tone-matching capabilities will be bettered over the course of the next year. For recording - it's choice. And sure, a lot of cats use this little widget exclusively, Dweezil comes to mind immediately. But that's Dweezil, and I'm Mo. Mo likes tubes :D

Move along, nothing to see here....
