Another thing is you're going to set things up differently to compensate or get the best effect. Leaving everything the same for a test only shows the raw response.. Anyone will twist knobs for full effect..

Really tho, only guitar players care about this shit.. LOL
Some hog housewife doesn't give a fuck what gauge you play while she's drinking her white zinfandel out of the box listening to the hits.. LOL

 too true.

As I'm getting older though, if I could play eights and sound the same, I think I would try it. Even 9's for me personally, is walking a tightrope. Too many years of landscaping and painting, I wanna choke that fretboard by instinct. :(

Standard .008 sets are kinda light (8-38)
Sometimes I try the Yngwie Fender set. 46, 32, 22, 14, 11, 8
Like the other dude says, you can jack the action a bit with 8's.
I've been using the YJM Fender set for a few years now. Played 10s from teenage yrs to early 2Ks; then went 9s for about 15 years. After I stopped gigging in 2017, I started to get some random hand/wrist pain while playing. I grabbed a Fender YJM set and have had no pain since. It is a bit difficult at first to get used to them; easy to fret chords sharp..had to learn a lighter touch. But now I'm used to them and highly recommend the YJMs as they are still chunky down low so you don't lose any thump at the low E.
