The USSR's decision to place missiles in Cuba was in direct response to NATO placing Nuclear missiles in Turkey in 1961. The video failed to mention this. The only reason Nikita Khrushchev stood down and agreed to remove the missiles to de-escalate the crisis was that Kennedy secretly overrode his military advisors to remove those missiles from Turkey allowing Khrushchev to save face on the world stage. This was kept secret for 25 years.

Jupiter missiles

Fifteen US-built PGM-19 Jupiter missiles, with the capability to strike Moscow with nuclear warheads, were deployed in Turkey in 1961. Another major reason why Khrushchev planned to place missiles on Cuba undetected was to "level the playing field" with the evident American nuclear threat.
