Oh yeah. You are not wrong. Probably why I like Trump more despite all his faults. He has his own money and not too interested in the old guard as it were. Also, the second party in the two party system didn't begin until 1854, as you know*. Who was our first Republican President? He abolished slavery while holding the country together. The Republicans largely held power until the Great Depression. The "New Deal" broke that run. But I get what you are saying. I've said it for many years that we can never seem to put our best men, and women, forward when it comes to choosing Presidential candidates. It makes us look foolish on the world stage.
