Exodus, by a mile :)
This despite zetro and the other gang of lames they had out front. I played with Pauly and he was the original, ultra heavy that crushed and spit out every band that they shared the stage with period. Slayer, Metallica and numerous bands attest to them destroying everything and everyone so severely that it's not even funny.

I need to listen to more Exodus because I only have heard a few songs. "Toxic Waltz" slays. When I was stationed in Korea in the early 90s, we had a "Headbangers Ball" thing at the club and only about 10 of us showed up. We played that song and were running around moshing, etc. and I remember the Korean workers looking at us like we had mental problems. LOL

Listen to Another Lesson in Violence live my friend, that is a lesson you won't soon forget...

Probably Testament, and I like Testament, but I would go with Forbidden because they're just plain better.

Overkill. No wait, Exodus.. No wait, Testament..

LOL, exactly.

I'd have to pick Overkill, honestly. They've never changed, stayed true to their roots, and put out more albums. That puts an exclamation on it, IMO. They just don't give a fuck, and keep churning out true thrash metal. Anthrax, Testament, and Exodus, ALL, at one time, tried to commercialize.. Not Overkill. They've always had a "Fuck You" attitude, and Blitz is the godfather of thrash, in my book.

I don't know. The best of Forbidden is easily up there with the best of Testament but Forbidden doesn't have a good batting average. First two are classics but their other 3 full lengths are spotty at best.

We will have to agree to disagree. Distortion and Omega Wave are both awesome. I haven't really listened to Green, so I can't speak for that one.

I find that everything Testament has put out since Low is good, but kinda forgettable. That isn't helped by the fact that every time I've seen them live, I have found them kinda boring to the point of fatigue. I actually left early the last time I saw them in Toronto.

Forbidden Evil and Twisted Into Form both kicked major ass. The next couple were forgettable, for me, anyway. Omega Wave a few years' back was pretty solid.

No way. LOL! I'm a bigger Testament fan but Forbidden kicks ass. I remember hearing "Chalice of Blood" the first time on some VHS tape and was blown away.

Forbidden Evil is great, but I think Twisted into Form is their best. OMG the riffage!!! I just wish they would remaster that one. The original is mixed so poorly, it doesn't do justice to the immenseness of this thrash masterpiece.

Ok, we are not demoting Anthrax or I'll burn this forum to the ground.....LOL

I love Anthrax!! "Metal Thrashing Mad", "Be All, End All", etc., etc
Oh definitely, I can't imagine Anthrax not being in the Big Four...forget the rap stuff and all that, especially earlier on they had the riffage, Belladonna's vocals were great, and aside from Chris Poland, Spitz was my favorite thrash lead player until Skolnick came along. Among the Living is one of the most classic thrash albums of all time. Early stuff was the best, but even some late Belladona era stuff like "Belly of the Beast"...totally classic.

If I'm just picking a 5th to join the classic 4, it's Testament by far. If their albums had started coming out 2 years earlier, there would have been a Big 5.

But I've always totally thought of Testament, Overkill, Exodus, and Kreator as the "other Big 4". That's a huge line-up all on its own.

I think anyone who has seen these four bands [Death Angel, Over Kill, TestAmenT & Exodus] in the past 2 years know “A Big 4” have been reestablished based on the quality of music that is still being written and how these bands are STILL murdering the crowds at their shows.

Testament in the Big 4 instead of Anthrax. Testament is the most consistent band out of the lot and the one I have the most respect for.

No way, but respect your avatar....LOL!

Did you live in K-Town? I was there from 85-88 and lived in Otterberg.

I get what all of you guys are saying about the "Big 4" but they were the originators. I mean, take it from someone in their 50's, Metallica's "Whiplash" sounds tame compared to all of the over-the-top stuff now and down tuning, dark videos, screaming vocals, etc. But, in the early 80s that was the fastest stuff out there. To this day, I remember hearing that riff in the "Four Horsemen" and being transfixed to the stereo, thinking "what the hell is this!!??"

In high school you had people listening to hair metal. Then out of that group, a few more would listen to a bit heavier metal. Then you had the diehards like my friends and I. When we played music, you knew it was good if all of the chicks made a scowl and left the room. Back in the day I think I was more into Testament than even Megadeth.

I think there's a difference between who made history back during the classic era vs who's lasted over time. I've always been a huge Overkill fan (I'm an East Coaster, gotta special spot for Anthrax and Overkill), but I would not have put them in the Big 4 in the 80's. Over the last few decades? I think they crush the entire Big 4.

Testament has done the same, but I think they have a bigger claim to hanging with the Big 4 on their 80's output alone. I mean, Anthrax is getting some hate here, but has Metallica really been relevant for decades now?

I'll go more controversial...if I could pick a "Big 4" on who's brought some of the best new thrash material in the last 10-15 years, I'll go Testament, Overkill, Havok, and Municipal Waste. Some of the "retro" younger bands have done a killer job keeping classic thrash alive.

Testament
Exodus for me would make the Big 6 list I guess.

Yeah, like I mentioned "Power Trip" for me. Even their gear captures that thrash tone. The drum beats are not super over the top, nice middy-crunchy riffs, etc.
