Who's into retro gaming?

I haven't played a Quake game since Quake II.
I originally played quake on the Sega Saturn lol back in 97 I think. Our PC at the time wouldn't have been able to run it. My first time playing online was in the early 2000s. I got wrecked horribly.

A lot of the die hard fans of quake dislike Quake Champions, but I enjoy the game. The game had a lot of problems too when it came out and spent most it's time in beta. I'm a big fan of the various movement styles. Slash's crouch slide is insanely fun. Basically a throw back to quake 4 crouch slide but better.

never played quake

was it fun?
Yeah it was very fun. The original quake was revolutionary for the time, and the dark atmosphere grittiness was super interesting. Prior to quake champions, the least well received quake was quake 4. Though it has its die hard following. And some people really dislike the introduction of the rail gun in quake 2. The rail gun during multiplayer really does change the game play a lot.

Quake Champions is worth a play if you have a capable PC. Keep in mind the small player base and the people with 30 years of experience in quake lol. It's rough. It is multiplayer only.

I sure liked the rail gun in Quake III Arena. Just like in UT, the map with the 3 skyscrapers where you can be on the roof or one level below, to play that map with say 20-30% gravity and just the rocket launcher, where you could load extra rockets if you held down the mouse button. Hilarity ensued when everyone is slow-mo hopping/bouncing while torrents of rockets flew everywhere. 😜

I really enjoyed the alternate fire modes of weapons in UT.

The issue I had with rail gun in quake is the amount of damage it did for a hitscan weapon. Sure, the long reload time is punishing, and not being able to switch from it until it reloads, but it's quite an oppressive weapon, and in the modern quake Champions game which has speed caps on movement and varying hotboxes of characters, I felt it was too easy to hit a shot. But at the end of the day I've learned to embrace it and take advantage of it. Not much of a choice lol.

Edit: I should mention that the overly oppressiveness of the rail gun really rears its head during duels rather than something casual like death match or team death match.

I have multiple old consoles. A modded TurboDuo, a comple in box TG16, a modded PC Engine, SNES, Super Famicom, NES, N64, GameCube, 2 softmodded Wiis, modded Genesis, modded Dreamcast, had a modded Saturn, modded PS2, Jaguar, multiple modded Atari 2600s, a modded 5200, and all of them (except the old Atari stuff) has a multicart with basically the entire rom collection. Multiple accessories too. I have 2 Batocera machines and one I play while the original hardware collects dust.

I recap most of my consoles and do my own mods as it's a lot of fun for me. I have probably $10k worth of old games and consoles that just collect dust now because of my main Batocera machine.

Of all the things my ex wife kept after we divorced, I miss my n64 and the games most.

Get one for like $100, a multicart, and then just download all the games. A small investment of maybe like $250 and some time downloading and you have the entire library in your hands on original hardware with cheat codes and save stages and all built in.

The one downside to using original hardware is trying to upscale it enough on modern TV's. I still have a couple older systems like my Saturn & PS1. They look like dogshit on a 60" TV. I just use my handheld emulator for those.

I would like to get a hold of an old CRT TV or even monitor. Modern displays and TVs do not hold a candle to the picture quality of a CRT. Even modern games look amazing on them.

Plus degaussing a CRT brings back memories lol.

I bought one of those devices you can hook various older inputs into and it upscales them. Highly recommended by retro gamer nerds....never even used the thing :cautious:

I was going to RGB mod all my consoles for the best possible picture to use through a multi switch I have also....never even used it either :cautious:

I decided to break out my old copy of Dungeon Siege and give it a play again.
