who's your guy's biggest influence and what made you start playing. i know personally chuck schuldiner from the band death/control denied is the biggest influence once i start listing i knew i had to start playing guitar. super original awesome guitar player and he is self taught!!! he doesnt use any effect to make his playing sounds cool like a lot of players do straight plug and play.

I don't have an answer right now, but I want to thank you for getting me out of a musical rut by re-introducing me to Death

Chuck made that Valvestate scream, that`s for sure.
That's what I was just thinking. Damn do they sound great in that video. Can't believe it's a valvestate. I've never been able to get a tone like that from then. I have copped some decent tones with one, but I think that video sounds great IMO.

when i was starting out/learning... Jerry Cantrell(Alice in Chains)

nowaday its Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth) Peter Wichers (Soilwork)
Guthrie Govan and Richie Kotzen.

When I was a really young kid, The Beatles and Elvis made me fall in love with music. Then I saw Jimi on TV and was blown away by how friggin cool he was and what he was doing, He made me fall in love with the guitar. After that, There were just so many cool bands in the 70's from Zep to Sabbath and Deep Purple, To UFO and Thin Lizzy, Aerosmith , Kiss and Robin Trower and Frank Marino and so many more.. The guy that made me want to buy a guitar though was EVH hands down.

In the end, Ive been inspired and influenced by pretty much everything that I like but my main influences are Neal Schon and Michael Schenker with Steve Stevens,Frank Marino,Sykes,Zakk, and Gary Moore following close behind... I should also mention that Im inspired and influenced by alot of people here most notably Ralphie,H,Ant and Ed D.

80's - Gary Holt, Randy Rhoads, Hetfield, Mustaine, King & Hanneman

90's - Gary Holt, Dimebag

Now - Gary Holt, Mark Morton, Willie Adler

Huge live gigs was what originally got me into music. The sheer monstrosity and grandeur made a really big impression on me. I picked up the guitar, and loved it from the beginning. Then I saw Iron Maiden live, and it cemented the passion!

As far as guitar playing itself goes, it's a bit of a mix. The smoothness of Eric Johnson, the slightly unorthodox legato and hammer on/pull-off technique of Steve Vai, and the raw power of Angus Young.

Now I just gotta put it all together

I'd probably say GnR - Appetite for Destruction. Not sure it made me pick up guitar, but it came out around that time. I had been into the 80's stuff -Lynch was probably my fav. When Appetite came out it was so f$cking raw and in your face. It punched all the pretty boy bands in the face. I think I had a Star Licks vid with Mike Wolf doing GnR licks :D

GEORGE LYNCH- Heard the solo to Paris is Burning when i was a little kid and was in heaven! I wanted to do that so badly.

Eric Johnson- Definitely also been one of my favorite inspirations as time progressed. His tone feel and articulation on Ah Via and Venus isle still amaze me.

...we all love guys like Guthrie, but they cant be compared to the classics because it was simply a different era of guitar playing. I other words i dont think it would ever be fair to compare EVH to Govan simply because of all the influences guys like govan had in getting as good as he is. The internet now has every reasource available to learn any kind of lick for free and leaving the sky the limit. When even i grew up all i had was RECORDS to learn from. I remember being an expert at jumping right back to the spot i needed to rewind to in order to hear the solo again to learn it.
Definitely diffferent times with lots of opportunities to see some serious virtuoso playing..

Started with my uncle and my dad playing Carl Perkins,Chet Atkins.
My uncle played with Carl Perkins a long time ago.
Then it was James Hetfield that got my interest with the down picking.
Gary Holt also, then later guys like Tom Vetteri from Coroner.
And Mille Petrozza from Kreator.and inbetween all that it was Brian May.
Steve Vai.Now it seems my taste in music has changed, back to country.
Old style not new,and stuff like Neil Young,Tom Waits.

Honestly, when I first started out? Paul Simon. Seriously.

When I got 'round to rock & roll and lead guitar, Tommy Shaw, hands down.

Half of the guys and gals on this board now

+1  Definitely a good vibe here...

But otherwise, my influences in no particular order:

Frank Zappa (because he played in a way that was unconventional and therefore, for the most part, unpredictable)
Randy Rhoads (he was the best heavy metal guitarist with the strongest of classical influence, brilliant)
Slash (one of the best blues based slingers around IMHO)
Page (unique, versatile, oodles of talent, so many styles)
Clapton (simple but smooooooooooooooooooth)
MacLaughlin (not simple, bloody nuts really)
Adam Jones (ambient - taking the 'rockstar' out of solos and making environments with his sounds rather than displays)

That's about it, however, there are a number of ancient classical peeps I'd include here as well, but the above came to mind right away.

DAVID GILMOUR
CRISS OLIVA
JIMI HENDRIX
