Why did you sell your 20th anniversary shiva?

I like the simplicity but I still want to hold out for an xtc again. If you've owned one tell me why you didnt keep it?

The 20th Shiva is a great amp, especially with the KT88s. I used to think it was a JCM800; while it has some of that DNA, it is its own beast. Modern back end with a very full-spectrum EQ. Through greenbacks, it can do the vintage thing and through G12-65s can do a convincing Dumble.

That said, I really love '68 Marshalls and their derivatives. And that (along with a Fender Deluxe clean channel preamp) is what the XTC is. It has that in-between era give and take to the power section that I simply love, especially with good glass. Three channels with boosts and a switchable loop and standby all at your feet - it really is the best of all amps. I always want to find something better (I am LOVING the Dirty Shirley right now - which has a lot in common with the BLUE channel) but it always comes back to the XTC.

like with most KT88 amps, it sounded boxy to me - not chewy enough

 I concur.

I never actually tasted mine, so I can't say if it was chewy, but it certainly was boxy when I mailed it off. :)

I had a Shiva 20th and going back and fourth with a Mesa Electra Dyne I could get them to sound damm close, that's with using various OD pedals. Actually, the Electra Dyne has a lot more bottom than the Shiva so I had to set the excursion really high to match the bass of the Mesa. The Shiva 20th is a sweet amp but I kept the Electra Dyne, and it's a lot cheaper.

Preferred the 20th Ecstasy and couldn't see the point of keeping it when the XTC does everything so well.

I still have a 20th Shiva and a 100B XTC. I'm going to sell the Shiva as it doesn't have the thump of the XTC, it has a much softer attack and I couldn't play with a two channel amp live.
