Why does the Blizzard of Ozz album sound...

Sound City Studios, actually. The Neve board is one of four made. Price was $70,000. And that was the late 60’s early 70’s. The albums cut on that board sound phenomenal.

Flying high again????
Just gold nugget after nugget.
One of my top 5 albums to this day.
Yep. One of my fav albums by any band, any era. I learned the title track when I was 17. That song will always haunt me, but in a good way. Randy’s pinnacle classical Ozzy tune.

IMO Ozzy’s best sounding album is hands down “Speak of the Devil.” Gillis’ tone is unfuckingreal on that album.
Such a great fucking album and the one that started it all for me as a kid way back when.

yeah same here "speak" was my intro to Ozzy as a slo artist. Only got it because of the cover and the fact it was Sabbath songs. The day after getting it I went back and Got "Diary" and it was game over .. Ozzy instantly became my favourite "band"

Agree totally that is sounds like Randy’s guitar and Ozzy’s voice are living in the same frequency, all upper mids. The drums are pushed way back as well, no depth. Just kinda there. The whole album sounds like listening to someone over an old phone landline.

Oh yeah, the drums! I forgot about that part of it.

I like the sound of older analog gear, honestly. Some of the best sounding albums came out on the 70’s and 80’s. Listen to the albums that came out of Sound Studios. What was that board? A Nieve, or something like that. Only a few exist.

Dave Grohl owns the one that all of that great stuff was recorded on. He has it setup in his own studio now and did some recordings with a few artists. Really cool documentary about it. Can't remember the name but such a great documentary. He found out they were selling it and he went down there and bought it. It is the Neve console and is like a spaceship. First album recorded on it was Buckingham Nicks or Fleetwood Mac if I remember right. That song "Rhiannon".

Call me crazy but I dig the sound and production on Ultimate Sin. A bit too much chorus but it sounds big and I love the song writing and riffage BATM is great too. I really don't have a definitive " this is it" album from Ozzy. No More Tears is awesome too and has a huge guitar sound.
You’re crazy lol Ultimate Sin is my least favorite Ozzy album. It sounds terrible, and the tunes have not aged well IMO, BATM is killer though.

Edit- let me explain this- it’s my least favorite of what I’ll call the classic years, that is, up through No More Tears. I don’t listen to anything after that, but Ultimate Sin is way better than ANYTHING after No More Tears.

Two funny things:

First off, I went vinyl shopping today and ended up with Sticky Fingers by the Stones and Queen Greatest Hits II. Both sound like heaven coming thru my turntable, Sprout 100 amp, and PSB speakers. It is like Mick is sitting on my couch singing. LOL

Anyway, as I was flipping thru the metal section, I saw two copies of "Blizzard of Ozz" in 180 Gram Vinyl. I almost bought it after all of our chatter.

Second funny thing, "Speak of the Devil". I went to a religious school for a few of my middle school years. My Mom and Dad were pretty understanding of me loving music but my Mom was the Church Secretary and we were always walking that line between what we should be doing, etc. and not doing. I was living on an Army Post so trust me, got a good helping of profanity, violence, etc. every day so there you go. LOL. Anyway, one day we were in the car and my Mom and I were having this deep conversation about music, etc. I can always tell her everything, so we were just being honest. I was like "Mom, it's just music, etc.". Then the following....

So we get home and "Speak of the Devil" in concert was on. My Mom goes "Oh, look at this. Ok, let's sit down and watch this. I'll be open minded.". I was happy to prove her wrong....until the upside down cross and hanged midget appeared....LOL! I gave up. LOL.

Funny thing is my Mom is a rocker now in her 70s. If GnR, Ozzy, Aerosmith, etc. is on the radio, she calls me so I can hear it in the background. Life is weird. Haha!

WHAT??? LOL! Dude, "Utimate Sin", "Secret Loser", "Shot in the Dark", "Lightning Strikes", "Fool Like You". Plus the hot ass woman on the cover. There is no way you are in your late 40s or 50s. I was ready to buy a glitter trenchcoat and Chuck Taylors to look like Jake back then. LOL

You know the midget was supposed to represent Ronnie James Dio right ?

Oh snap. LOL. You bastard, I'm 50. I'm sending Jake E. Lee to your house....LOL

I don't know why I gelled with that album like I did. Probably a lot to do with my age at the time, being in high school, learning guitar, and seeing Jake in all of those Guitar World interviews, etc.

I loved it then, I just think it didn’t age well. I LOVE BATM, Badlands (all three), I even listen to Wicked Alliance, so I’m a Jake fan. In fact, the BATM concert video was shown on MTV on the Friday night concert, and Jake was the first of the whole LA seen I had ever scene at that point and he blew me away, I was just getting out of my little Kiss cocoon at that time, and starting to expand my guitar horizons. Jake has a special place for me.

LOL, KISS cocoon. I won't tell you about all of my KISS collectibles. I guess I'm still stuck in the cocoon. LOL. My boss came to work one day and heard I like KISS. He goes I have one of those comics with the blood I've been trying to get rid of. After I cleaned up my seat from shitting myself, I asked how much. He said "you tell me". I think I got it for like $250!

I know we aren't talking about Jake now but in the present, he is nowhere close to what he was in his prime and I wish people wouldn't keep saying he hasn't lost a step because he totally has. He's behind the beat on most of the shows I have seen or fighting the picking. Now that said, during his tenure with Ozzy he was a definite virtuoso. I love Randy but to me Jake had a ton more tricks in his magic hat and his rythm playing, melodies, and awesome vibrato made him more than qualified to carry the torch. Anyway, nothing to do with the thread but seeing as we are talking about Jake. I'm 43 so a young pup I suppose but I think that album still holds up, it is just the production that is dated.Killer of Giants also an awesome tune. But yeah, I get why most people shit on that album.

PS- listening to Ultimate Sin right now and you guys are right, the drums sound terrible. Snare is thin and way too snappy and bright and the bass drum sounds like cardboard.

You guys can call me crazy, but I think Ultimate Sin is a stronger album than Bark at the Moon.

I'm with you on that dude! Don't get me wrong, I love the title song and "Centre of Eternity" and "You're No Different" but I love Ultimate Sin.

All of Ozzy’s guitarists have been killer, but none of them can touch those songs that Rhoads, Daisley, Kerslake, and Osbourne wrote for those first two albums. There’s lots of great riffs and great playing on everything from Ozzmosis backwards, but those songs on those first two albums are beyond cool. Nothing on any of the albums after Randy even comes close to touching the title track on DOAMM. That song is incredibly complex, original, nuanced, and utterly haunting. That song is the pinnacle of Ozzy’s songwriting career.

Bob Daisley is a genius. These are some of the best lyrics ever written:

Screaming at the window
Watch me die another day
Hopeless situation
Endless price I have to pay

Sanity now it's beyond me
There's no choice

Diary of a madman
Walk the line again today
Entries of confusion
Dear diary, I'm here to stay

Manic depression befriends me
Hear his voice
Sanity now it's beyond me
There's no choice

A sickened mind and spirit
The mirror tells me lies
Could I mistake myself for someone
Who lives behind my eyes?
Will he escape my soul
Or will he live in me?
Is he trying to get out
Or trying to enter me?

Voices in the darkness
Scream away my mental health
Can I ask a question
To help me save me from myself?

Enemies fill up the pages
Are they me?
Monday till Sunday in stages
Set me free
