Why don't 90's guitar players get talked about here?

I'm curious to hear the new Arch Enemy

The new track that has been released on YouTube is pretty good. Angela's replacement sure can scream!!!

Awesome playing, awesome writing, and awesome guitar tone. Don't care for the completely dirty lyrics though, especially female dirty lyrics.

BTW, I HATE TOOOOLLLL! Ahhhh, Ok, I feel better now. :D

I fail to see the difference between "art" and " product" as someone stated earlier. So because an artist sells a lot of records and is mainstream than it is now a product? "Art" is only eccentric music that only a few "artists" like?

BTW. It's weedly, weedly, weedly.

First of all, fuck the 80's. Specifically all those glam bands, they all fuckin totally suck. (Looking at you Trixter, and faster pussycat et al.)

Fuck those bands.

Guitar shredding, awesome. The package it came in sucked.
Thank god for satriani and vai for taking the cock rock singer bitch out of the equation.

That being said, the 90's fuckin ruled!
Some of the BEST guitar tones and approaches were from the 90's
Once they destroyed all this shitty glam bands, and threw away their fizzy shit tone amps, we actually got real guitar heroes back.

I for one am happy to see the demise of any cock rocker.

This one track is better than anything from the 80's

But I will post a few more that just destroyed all those makeup wearing ladyboys.
There is more diversity and a wider range of awesome new guitar sounds in the 90's than anything from the 80's, I can't even post enough examples of how diverse the 90's were for guitar.
80's were for animal prints, spandex loving wanna be shredders, the 90's is where the REAL music happened.

I could go on and on, although I will say that none of my comments apply to alternative and punk, or thrash metal bands of the 80's , only those glam pussies.

    Smahing Pumpkins?

Yup ole Uncle Fester had song writing, guitar playing and Tone down to a science!  Not to mention the perfect approach to vocals....I've heard better sounds out of my cat when I accidently sucked her tail into the Hoover......

Shinedown rocked me through a grueling work experience recently. I think there was one guitar solo.

Weedly weedly doesn't make a good song. It's cool if it's in a good song, but not a requirement. Never has been.

I sorta missed out on alot of the 90's. :aww:
Was shipped over to Japan in 1991. No internet....local radio sucked....so I relied on what I knew. The 80's.
Tons of old cds and tapes. Nothing wrong at all with that.
Came back to the USA about 1996. Buddy turned me on to alot of stuff I missed out on. Loved it!
Helmet....Sepeltura...Pantera....Foo Fighters.....Gwar....Propain.... sound garden ...
Probably a shit load more but I cant recall.
I wasnt too worried about solos or whatever.
Lot of good things going on. Sure was fresh! :D
Depends on what you wanted to listen to. ;)

It's because you dudes are so old

I'd much rather talk about J Mascis than George Lynch

Okay, so I just went next door to the neighborhood market and asked like 8 random people if they could name a Van Halen song. Their ages ranged from like mid 20s to like 38 or 40 years old.

One person was able to name 1 song: "Uhmm.... hmmm.... oh oh... like... Jump? Yeah... Jump."

Nobody was able to name more than 2 EVH songs. Jump was the one most people knew. The other songs people were able to name were Panama and Hot For Teacher. But those were the only three songs.

And nobody could sing or hum them other than "Jump!" or "Panama! Panama-ah-ah-ah!"

I'm starting to think the people on this lonely corner of the internet are overestimating the importance of Van Halen... Not that they weren't talented. But people really just don't care anymore unless it's karaoke night. ;) Not that any other band from the '80s or '90s would fair any better. But it's music. Only musicians like the us on internet forums care that much about this stuff.

EVH to me deserves mountains of respect from anyone that plays a guitar. He revolutionized guitars, technique and equipment in ways that changed music forever and for that, I bow down. But Van Halen as a band to me has always been ruined by their vocalists. DLR is a used car salesman dressed like a drag queen with the vocal ability of Huey Lewis. Sammy Hagar had great vocal abilities but his melodies and lyrics were irritating and the albums he was on just sucked. I can ignore DLR and enjoy the music but after the 1984 album Van Halen didn't have more than a few riffs that I enjoyed.

I get the EVH worship around here even if it's taken to damn near star wars fan boy levels but there also seems to be a lot of ignorance to things outside of Van Halen and a few other bands. To each their own, whatever makes people happy but for me as a musician, I like to evolve and grow.

I am going to listen to some old Roth era VH right now!!!

For those of us who have lived through or as exposed heavily to the great rock area from the late 60's, 70's, 80's and early 90s have a greater appreciation for guitar driven rock/metal with killer guitar solos and expect nothing less. The song still has to be great or even good with a great riff, but I also need my killer riffs and solos!!

roth era van halen is so good!! I love it!! personally, I could not stand hagar. to me it seemed like they went from having these gritty and mean songs, both guitar and vocals, and then all of a sudden having happy upbeat sounding songs, and it was a drastic and poor change to me. they lost their edge. at the time I remember being totally bummed out and thinking, "what the hell have they done?" I am sure plenty of people will totally disagree with this, in fact I know some people who feel the EXACT opposite and think that's when the right and true incarnation of van halen was born.

hagar was a screaming hippie with a headcold but he made a lot of money turning vh into yuppies.

I just like to listen to it all. This week I'm actually in a total 90's mood, listening to nothing but Deftones, Incubus, Rage Against the Machine. Last week it was all 80's, Ratt, Dokken, Crue, TNT, Lion. Next week it might be power/prog time, Symphony X, Adagio, Circus Maximus. Then maybe the early 70's strikes, and it will be Budgie, Zeppelin, Leaf Hound.

I have plenty of bands/artists I don't care for, but I can't really bash any era outright. And I don't feel apologetic either. If I want to listen to Warrant or Limp Bizkit, I don't feel guilty at all. To each their own, but I'd rather just relax, enjoy what I like, keep taking in new music and let my playlist fit my mood.
Well said.

Also … nice avatar! I STILL play the hell out of both Fifth Angel cd's. First heard them when Howard Stern used "Midnight Love" on his show intro back on Channel 9.

Pumpkins had a far more interesting approach to tone and songwriting than all those cheesy hairbands did. ;)

What's there to talk about? How hard the decade sucked?

Great view.

I agree with this post but I also think DLR is a badass with the high pitched squeals.

Not a lot of talk about Pete Klett. This is a great tune.

Gish was solid, raw, they peaked with Siamese Dream but it was also one hell of an album but then they did the double album and it was 50/50 great songs to crap. After that it was like Billy Corgan purposely hit the gas and drove the band into a telephone pole because the material was just... wow, awful. But I agree, the writing, chemistry and tone was unique.

I think a lot of people around these parts hated the 90s because bands got away from wankery but they did so for good reason and it was actually the best thing for guitar because it gave guitar heroics some down time which then gave other players time to re-invent the shred in a better way. There was just so so many bands in the 80s playing completely regurgitated, carbon copied bullshit pulled out of a cookie cutter.

Everyone thinks grunge and punk rock destroyed guitar shred but I think the genre destroyed itself which gave something else a chance to take the spotlight. I was never much of a grunge fan but skate punk, shit yeah, I loved skate punk then and I love it now and anyone in here or anywhere else that thinks skate punk bands were talentless needs to listen to the musicianship that bands like Strung Out, Lagwagon and many others put on display.

Thank you.

Probably my favorite "90's" band

I pretty much lived on Pantera in the 90's, but at least there was still some good songwriting back then. Nirvana, Candlebox, Ministry, all good ORIGINAL sounding bands....But then NU-METAL arrived in the late 90's and THOSE guys have been stuck in the Korn, Slipknot, Tool, Godsmack, DJENT, shitty screaming vocals, down-tuned-play with one finger-way too much gain, GARBAGE metal that is still predominant today.... That shit is more oversaturated today than CC Deville's hair was with hairspray in 1989! :LOLv

I agree with all of this except Candlebox... in what world were they original sounding? They were just another American yarling hard rock band.
