Why don't 90's guitar players get talked about here?

Naah.. 90's offered me nothing. Jump up and down hybrid emo emotional rap crap. fuck that.

Venom, Slayer, early Metallica, Maiden etc... thats where it's at. This was radical, where as the 90's was about making one big soup.

Even Morbid Angel i consider an 80's band...

Okay, so I just went next door to the neighborhood market and asked like 8 random people if they could name a Van Halen song. Their ages ranged from like mid 20s to like 38 or 40 years old.

One person was able to name 1 song: "Uhmm.... hmmm.... oh oh... like... Jump? Yeah... Jump."

Nobody was able to name more than 2 EVH songs. Jump was the one most people knew. The other songs people were able to name were Panama and Hot For Teacher. But those were the only three songs.

And nobody could sing or hum them other than "Jump!" or "Panama! Panama-ah-ah-ah!"

I'm starting to think the people on this lonely corner of the internet are overestimating the importance of Van Halen... Not that they weren't talented. But people really just don't care anymore unless it's karaoke night. ;) Not that any other band from the '80s or '90s would fair any better. But it's music. Only musicians like the us on internet forums care that much about this stuff.
I see your fake supermarket poll and raise you any Steel Panther show nowadays. Most of the people there are about my age. There may not be a lot be there is definitely a scene throughout the world that actually like 80's metal and travel great distance to see the one band playing it.

But why does it matter? I like AIC, SOAD, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Halestorm, MCR, Used, Macklemore etc who cares if I also add Motley Crue and shit on that list? People nowadays are so divided on such subjective things as genre. "Hey, I hear a guitar solo... Exactly how tight are the pants of the singer and how high the hair of the bassist before I can deem if I like it or not"
Look at fucking Download; Slipknot, Steel Panther, GWAR, Twisted Sister, Iron Maiden... The crowd sings along to each band because outside the internet people don't give a shit what genre something is. If it's good it is good. One hour they are all singing to Community Property the next People = Shit.

Nah, wasn't a fake poll. I actually did it. You should seriously try it. Go find some random people and legit ask them to name a few EVH songs.

But I agree that "genre" isn't something people usually care about specifically. And yeah, if something is good, it's good. But there's a time and a place for certain types of music. That's something I'm sure everyone can agree upon. If I'm at a party with some fellow late-20's-early-30's people I doubt EVH is going to come up on the playlist unless it's an '80s throwback night or something. The same is true for '90s rock. I doubt rock would be on the playlist at all actually. Until later in the night when everybody is shit faced and dancing and somebody throws Journey or Queen on as a feel good joke.

I have plenty of friends that listen to "good" music while they work or clean the house and such. An Art Director I work with blasts metal and electronic dance music while he works in Photoshop all day. Go figure. Sometimes I like listening to Billy Joel or Sam Cooke instead of Sound Garden. Hell I even like some tunes from Cabaret. It all depends on my mood. :)

I rest my case.

Sweet fancy posting of extremes! LOL!!!

I think there's good music from all decades. One just has to open their mind to new things. Yeah, I love hard rock/"metal" from the late 70's and early 80's, they both hold a special place in my heart, but I hear music even from today that I enjoy. Even, gulp, POP and country stuff. <belch>

My favorite 80's tune......

I'll see your "Whip It" and raise you...

Would've thrown-out The Divinyls' "I Touch Myself" but that didn't come out until '90. :D

All this is relative to the formative times of our youth...period. You're always gonna defend the music that influenced you... You're always gonna think that it's the best. Kids nowadays are gonna think that scooped out distorted bassy guitar tones are the way to go..till they play a gig and their friends say 'I couldn't hear your lead over your other guitar player' and he happens to play a Marshall or something that has mids. I grew up with Maiden, Queensryche and other 80s prog hard rock bands. So I will always enjoy listening to them. I saw Soundgarden and AIC in the late 80s in MPLS and I loved those shows..started covering 'outshined' immediately. Noone knew the song but we didn't care. I saw Tool for the first time 2 summers ago and it was GREAT. I try to listen to as much as I can and if I like it, I'll buy it...music is to be enjoyed so if you like it LISTEN to it and who gives a shit about anyone else..

First of all, fuck the 80's. Specifically all those glam bands, they all fuckin totally suck. (Looking at you Trixter, and faster pussycat et al.)

Fuck those bands.

Guitar shredding, awesome. The package it came in sucked.
Thank god for satriani and vai for taking the cock rock singer bitch out of the equation.

Once they destroyed all this shitty glam bands, and threw away their fizzy shit tone amps, we actually got real guitar heroes back.

I for one am happy to see the demise of any cock rocker.

But I will post a few more that just destroyed all those makeup wearing ladyboys.

80's were for animal prints, spandex loving wanna be shredders

I could go on and on, although I will say that none of my comments apply to alternative and punk, or thrash metal bands of the 80's , only those glam pussies.
Are you just pissed that you found some of us so attractive back then that it confused you? ;)

Steve

Arguing over something as subjective as what one person likes vs what someone else likes is like pissing into the wind...but to say an entire decade of "cock rock sucked" is fuckin' silly. There was A LOT of shit music in the 90s too...and the 2000s also. Hell, there has been shit music from the very start of rock music.

I just like to listen to it all. This week I'm actually in a total 90's mood, listening to nothing but Deftones, Incubus, Rage Against the Machine. Last week it was all 80's, Ratt, Dokken, Crue, TNT, Lion. Next week it might be power/prog time, Symphony X, Adagio, Circus Maximus. Then maybe the early 70's strikes, and it will be Budgie, Zeppelin, Leaf Hound.

I have plenty of bands/artists I don't care for, but I can't really bash any era outright. And I don't feel apologetic either. If I want to listen to Warrant or Limp Bizkit, I don't feel guilty at all. To each their own, but I'd rather just relax, enjoy what I like, keep taking in new music and let my playlist fit my mood.

One of the most reasonable posts I have ever read on here . Thank you.
