I was just thinking about it, and I wondered why it is called the brown sound??? I am sure every guy on here knows why it was coined the brown sound, but I don't have a clue. Why????

Because that's what the God-King of this forum EVH called it. He said in an interview in the late 70s that most people's guitar tones at the time was like AM radio, but he likes more of a "brown" sound. 40 years later, the term is still being used.

I've always wondered this too.

Some people see colors through sound some how. It's called synethesia. Sounds crazy, but I listened to a podcast with Lasse Lambert and he has it. I'm not sure if the brown sound we know if is actually brown to him though.

Also there is white noise and pink noise. A static build up of specific frequencie curves or something. Not sure if the "brown sound" was based off that somehow

I always thought it had to do with the Variac, and a "Brownout" of power instead of a "Blackout". Not sure though..

There is Brown Noise as well. White noise is equal volume across every frequency band. Pink noise is white noise with a -3dB/oct rolloff starting at 0Hz. Brown noise has a -6dB/oct rolloff starting at 0Hz.

I have that as well. For me the VH sound is metallic grey though...

because people shit their pants when EVH hit the scene.

LOL!

I remember hearing "Eruption" when I was a freshman in high school. I would have named it "Massive Erection" tone because that is what I had. :)

A family friend of mine is a self taught MASTER pianist. She also has synesthesia. As a little girl always told us she "saw" music and sound. Amazing stuff.

All right, now we're getting somewhere. All we need is for you to ask your friend to listen to VH1 and tell us what color she sees! ;)

I thought he was referring to the brownish gold of the Marshall switch panel. But gold sound doesn't sound right.
