I am about to order a Carvin guitar and want a tremolo, but not a floyd, how is the tuning stability of the Wilkinson?
The best non-locking nut type tremolo system in my opinion is a standard Hipshot or the Pearl Caster. They both ride on full hardened stainless steal ball bearing pin pivots. It’s made from a super hard steel alloy bearing system to insure excellent return to pitch accuracy, maximum tone, sustain, and durability. They are fully floating and when setup correctly will always return to correct pitch. They are virtually indestructible and will last longer than the guitar.
The Wilkinson, on the other hand, is not made from a super hard steel alloy, and it rides on two knife edges (not bearings) that will wear considerably depending on how hard you work the system. Also, when I had two of the Wilkinson tremolo systems, the damn wobble and occasional fluttering in the tremolo arm drove me nuts. The Hipshot and Pearl Caster both exhibit zero wobble.
Also, don't buy into the Trem-Setter, because it’s junk. When I had one installed by a very good guitar tech, he warned me of the major differences in feel and tone, and he was right. The thing felt like I was always wrestling it because of the massive added pressure on the main frame of the tremolo. I still find it ironic that Hipshot even manufactures this gimmick. So save yourself $48 and pass it on by…
I wouldn't touch a Floyd if you pointed a gun to my head. Floyd was conceived back when electric guitar tuners were horrible. Sperzel rectified this whole quagmire.
The Hipshot and Pearl Caster are as smooth as silk – stock!
