Just because he is a competent musician, or even wonderful at soundtrack composition, that doesn't mean he is a competent guitarist.

Composing/writing is a different skillset than performing on an instrument. The sound isnt there in anything he plays. Could have the best gear in the world and wont make a difference to the core sound beneath.

i’m certainly not defending the guy by any means.

but for as many of us out there that think he’s bonkers, there seems to be an equal amount of emperors robe defenders and fans claiming he can actually play *normal* but he just doesn’t want to.

Yeah, the thing is, it is even just the way he picks and frets the notes. As in, you could play a good melody with his poor technique and it would sound bad. This isn't about what he chooses to play - but how he plays it naturally, which is not so much a choice, but a limitation.
