Wiring a 2x12.........series or parallel ?

I alwys heard that series wiring leads to phase issues and a bit of a drop in low end. Is there any truth to this ?

I have a few 8 ohm speakers laying around and I have an empty cab as well. Should I go 4ohm parallel or 16ohm series

I wouldn't be using the cab with another cab at the same time so going 4ohm is not an issue.

each impedance feels a little diffrent to me anyway.

I prefer 8 ohm loads. its got the right balance of attack and warmth for me.

the only phase issues would be if it was wired incorrectly.


4 ohms will be louder and a little harsher.

16 will be warmer and not as loud.


also, what amp will it be used on? what output tap uses the whole transformer?

It depends on what you want the cabinet ohmage to be. Assuming you have 2 - 8 ohm speakers:

Parallel = 4 ohm cabinet
Series = 16 ohm cabinet

phasing won't be an issue unless you screw up the positve and negative terminals.

Parallel's advantage: if you blow one speaker you can continue the gig - and you'll keep your amp healthy.

I put this Marshall jack plate on all my 212's with 8ohm speakers. Not you can have both series and parallel and see what works best for you. http://www.tubesandmore.com/scripts/fox ... tem=S-H800

I have heard a difference, but its hard to put my finger on if its the wiring method or using all/part of the output transformer. I do know I like my Marshall 2553 better at 16ohms than I do at 4ohms. So I run the 2 speakers in series.
