I still haven't landed on the perfect tube cocktail yet, but I'm digging the hell out of this amp.
Sounds great!
The 2010 MC100 I had wasn’t very picky about pre tubes..power tubes I’d make sure you use 34s that can handle the plate voltage...he sends them with JJ EL34L but I liked Winged C or Siemens better.
How does the Wizard compare to the QR in the room?
The Wizard sounds great by the way! Probably hard to make an amp like that sound bad though when you play that well.
If you are looking for some reasonable vintage pre try Tungsram. You can find them for 30 or so used. I remember those sounding best; but the difference was not as great as with a vintage Marshall.Mine is a '96, and it doesn't have the pull-boost on the lead channel like the newer ones have. It also doesn't have an effects loop. I was actually kind of surprised how much of a difference the preamp tubes made in this particular amp when I was swapping them around. I ordered a mix of JJ's, Chinese 12AX7's and some Tung-Sol's....and unfortunately both the Chinese and Tung-Sol 12AX7's showed up noisy. So, at the moment it's all JJ's in there...which is just a little dark for my tastes. I've heard good things about the EH 7025's, so I may give them a try. I have Winged C's in the power section.
I never noticed a huge difference with the Wizards and preamp tubes, but I do think I like the 6n4 Beijing square getters in the MCII best from what I tried. Not a night/day difference from anything I've tried in there, but I wound up with those Square getters in all the preamp slots and kept them there.
Sounds great and tight playing
We're all different of course, but I actually preferred the stock JJE34L to the real deal =C= it tried in the MCII. The =C= were nice but they smoothed and compressed the tone a bit. There was more attack with the 34Ls, especially in the lows. Best way I can put it: =C= were creamy/smeared where the E34Ls were sharp/more defined.Love it, crisp and tight as hell! I‘ve had 3 Modern Classics in the past and the best one was a ‘96 like yours. Mine was a 6L6 version and was particularly punchy and defined with 4 Sylvania 6L6s. I concur preamp tubes make less of a difference in Wizards than in Marshalls. You’ve got to ditch those JJ power tubes; they’re the equivalent of McDonalds.
I hear you and partially agree. Winged Cs are a bit overrated IMO. They don’t hold a candle to Rick’s EL 34 of choice (sadly unavailable now, or at least not made to the same standard anymore) the GT E34LS. Those old GTs sounded like greatly improved JJs with more detail, treble extension and stoutness. I can’t remember what factory produced them. Could have been the same as where JJs are currently made but to a higher standard with likely superior equipment tooling. The machinery/tooling that helps construct our beloved tubes and speakers of old is often subject to breaking down and sometimes when it gets fixed or replaced, or even left to deteriorate, quality suffers. We're all different of course, but I actually preferred the stock JJE34L to the real deal =C= it tried in the MCII. Awesome stuff right there.
Looking forward to listening again via headphones. Seemed very KSE inspired?
Would love to hear that with the Splawn.
