I had a 2012 MTL 100 best sounding amp I have ever owned, mine had the A transformer it was amazing. Much better than any of the MC's I owned or played much less feeling ear fatigue...I sold it mostly because it can't be used in a home environment much, mine didn't have a loop and I didn't want the Wizard loop to tame it. If Rick could get a better volume taper happening I would try one again.
I know SQUAREHEAD on here has owned both 2012 and 2016 he could explain the differences in detail
They are significantly different.
I own this amp now (thanks northern1 ) and it is indeed special. Totally different than my 2016 MCII.
I'm curious about the differences between a 2012 MTL and the MTL's being made now as well. I've toyed with the idea of sending my amp to Rick for a loop and updates, but I've held off for now because I just don't feel like I want to mess with a good thing.

Rick has stated to me that he refuses to do any updates to a 2012. Though I would like a loop in mine. I wonder where I can get one installed...

That's interesting. I emailed him in November and he gave me a quote to do the work. I don't want to say what he quoted me, but it wasn't cheap, and it was US$ and I'm in Canada. Aside from not wanting to change the sound of my amp, it was hard to justify the cost. He probably quoted it so high to guarantee it was worth his time and trouble to do the work IDK :dunno:

You could always install a Metro loop I guess. I think mine is gonna stay just the way it is.

Yes Mr. Rick can be a bit of a Richard at times lol! He wants $500.00 usd plus all shipping both ways... that's on or near $1000.00 cnd for a loop
Unless it's more now.

Yes it's definitely more now

Honestly, Wizard is just Rick, and I think he's probably is too busy to mess around with these retrofit jobs. He's probably pricing the upgrades to either discourage anyone wanting to do it, or if you do want to go ahead with the work, the price more than makes up for the aggravation and time he's losing building new amps. Totally his call and I respect that.

This 100%. If you want a new one it will sound great. If you have an older one its great also. If you want a new one keep your older one as it sounds great and get a newer one also. I don't blame Rick. He's an amazing person!
He deserves to semi-retire. The Man was putting in 12 plus hour days for many years. He told me in 2017 things were changing and he would have help so he could enjoy life a little bit
A Man that made a huge mark in the music World. I respect him!

-hmmmm. maybe I should try more tubes!!... I was gonna ask if other WIZARD owner's had noticed that different power tubes make little difference, thou I've only tried the stock JJ E34L's & GOLD LION KT77's, I thought there would be a drastic tonal change-(only difference between these two were the typical GOLD LION very articulate, almost too much dynamic's)-but the voicing stayed the same, I did a change over to GOLD LION pre's with little if any change in tone-(I have a good stash of pre's at 100+/- mostly NOS)-it's hard tube rolling these "things" with out just wanting to play...

-what kinda bias are you guys using?... I'm at 46

I am just shocked that you are not getting outrageous tone with the default setup without all of this tinkering (running the tubes on the bad end of the curve). Worry less about this stuff and do some playing with a one of the best amps out there!

-well I've had it for just over a week!! A mans gotta tweak! The E34L's are designed for higher plate voltage, thou they are JJ's, the GOLD LION KT77's I know will take having the piss pounded out of um, and I am getting "outrageous tone!!!".... It's a WIZARD after all.

as far as wizard loops go.

when engaged you can definitly hear a tone change and slight buzz and noise. .......

but only at low volume.

when turned up to gigging volume on the master, the tone change and hum is no longer noticible. no more noticeable than my friedman jj loop or my metro loop in my jcm 800

I have a '16 MTL and a '14 MCII. I don't think the loops are much different than the loop on my BE100. I always hear slight tone suck on any loop, no matter what amp I'm playing. I don't have any buzz or added noise in the loops of my amps.

That's not what I experienced in my MCII. No matter what the volume there was a muddyness and loss of highs when engaged. It also looses a bit of the thud that Wizards are known for. Very disappointing.

Shame on you for not letting the caps break in and the Output transformer magnetize :D

Rick put a loop in one of my Modern Classics recently and I do not notice any adverse affects to the tone of the amp.. certainly no "muddy" tones lol Ive talked to another person who had an issue with his loop initially and sent it back to Rick to have it fixed.. he fixed it but wouldnt say what the issue was.. typical. Anyway, I think being a one man show he tends to rush things at times and problems arise from time to time.. happens I guess, but for the money I'd be a little pissed.

For you guys with Wizard 4x12's, pretty happy with the build quality?

Oh yeah

Best cab I've owned. Built like a tank. Mine is loaded with 2 x Heritage G12H-30's & 2 x Heritage G12M-25's.

Sounds

NCD soon

These and my 16'MTL (serial #69  ) are a match made in Heaven. Some of the best constructed cabs I've ever come across!

Love my 2x12 as well. Mine is loaded with Lynchbacks. I've beat the heck out of that hung for years. Top notch build quality.
