Not the MCII, the MC1 - Rick has a Mk2 version now of the MC1, simpler layout and a little less money than the MCII. The Modern Classic and the Modern Classis II are different amps.
I know. I have been in the search for a MCII but noticed that MC would satisfy my needs since the Rhtyhm Channel of my MTL have already a gain knob and Black Kat mod.

In the webpage their price are the same but maybe I should send an email to him about the final price.

The longer I’ve owned wizards my biggest recommendation is really tweaking that sweep knob on the MTL and the bright on the back. Can really change things drastically with these two.

People might think I’m crazy but I truly think you can get away with just having an MTL. I say this the longer I’ve owned multiple wizards. Just my 2 cents though.

When you first grab one you do keep wanting more though; so I totally understand the chase there. Best of luck!

Hi Brandon, thanks for the comment! I really enjoy your videos and actually chose the MTL over the MC based on your comparisons.
That said I’m still curious about the MC. I’m currently running the lead bright and sweep both between 2-3 o’clock — if you have any suggestions to push the MTL closer to MC territory I’d love to hear.

Yes the transformer seems to be from 2009 as you mentioned. I will ask the seller. If they are close enough that’s still fine. Some time ago I read somewhere the A transformers tend to sound darker but I do not remember where. I am curious about the Lead Channel and as far as I know it’s fairly similar across all the versions.
The A transformer is where it is at….unless you want VH…which I don’t. Yeah my MC1 has the A as it was my choice of the two.

Dude that's the truth. I love my MCII and HR and I find myself wondering about the W800 sometimes. These amps are dangerous man.

So you picked A over V? How do you compare them?
This was in 2005. Wizard was out of production at the time. Talked Rick into building me one. Can’t say what the other transformer was, did not pay attention. We were talking and he asked if I wanted VH and I said heck no. He sent me the A and I put it in. This transformer is bigger sounding, has more clarity in the chords, nice round bottom end.

I see. Do you still have that amp? With VH you mean Diezel VH or Van Halen, sorry for the confusion :D

A bit rounder low end sounds good, MTL is already very tight and sorta modern. I had a Friedman Twin Sister which had a round low end as well but sold to fund another Wiz.

Sorry Van Halen. Yes I still have the amp it is my main amp. Played a ton of gigs with it and still do.
Low end is still tight, just round and solid. Not the “thwack” sound Marshalls have.

I play in three piece bands so a big sound is needed, this is perfect.

That sounds cool. I’m not sure if I would like to have the Marshall sound anymore. The Wizard just destroys all the good Marshall’s and variants like old JMP’s and Friedman’s, for what I’m doing at least. Still curious on the Ground Zero MOAB though, I would like to try it some time for sure.

Good references for my sound are Russian Circles (which is also a three piece band) and Mastodon. I don't really search for a 80s sound as well; riff-based music from the 90s and beyond suits my style better.

I still have my Marshalls. Use them once in awhile, but mostly they just sit at home. My old ‘69 plexi is my favorite one, still a stock preamp mostly, power amp not so much. 2203’s I really dislike stock, they need alot of help in the tone department for me.

I never chased others tones really. Had the sound in my head which was bits from many players. This Wizard is probably as close as I will ever get. Been really happy with it.

I was happy with a TS in front of a 2203 type circuit (Friedman JEL) until I play and hear the Wizard. Maybe W800 or Vintage Classic in the future, would be great to try. MC with A transformers also seem to be Hetfield spec, since his one is also earlier but not sure.

I'd get the newer MC1 Mk2 - it covers everything from the Marshall KERRANG thing to full out metal if you boost it up front, turn up the gain or even pull the gain boost but that's not totally necessary. Great saturation and THUMP.

Did he alter the circuit a bit to get more kerrang mids in the current version?

1000%, on the hunt again or might reach out to Rick for a new MTL build and thats probably what I will stick with.

I am enjoying the MTL MKII a lot, best amp I have ever played and the only amp that forces me to be a better player (which is a good thing, I think :) ). I did not feel the same GAS for any other brand (Marshall, Friedman, Victory etc.), this one is totally different.

Have you tried other models, what do you think about them?

Ive had the MCII - EL34 100, MTL-EL34 100, MTL-KT75, and Hell Razor KT-150

I found the Hell Razor to be too tight for my tastes, the MC-II was great especially with boosts but the MTL was the sweet spot when I had each of the models. it had the right amount of everything to me.

I expect sort of similar things accoeding to what I hear in videos. But still very curious about MC / MCII

The MCII has less gain compression and bass vs the MTL. Better mids IMO, Although I have the 6L6 model of the MTL. Basically the perfect hard rock amp. Clear and punchy as hell.

They are both needed then haha
