Sup guys, im looking for a replacement for my Charvel's bridge pickup. Alder body, maple neck, 1h. It has a Custom 5 right now, which i dig but i need something not so over the top.

I know these are not wax potted and since the Charvel is my main live guitar im also wondering about that... could it be an issue?

Thanks!

I have a set in my R9 and they sound great but they're a bit on the brighter side. If you're concerned about them squealing, I don't have any issues but I don't play with extreme levels of gain either.

I had a set a few years back and they squealed a little. I sent then back to Wolfe and he gave them a light potting. Worked like a charm. Email him. He's a great guy and will make sure you're happy with his pickups.

Hi man, thanks for your answer.

I play with some ACDC type of gain, nothing too extreme.

That shouldn't be a problem then. Great pickups!

Depending on the gain level ... they’ll squeal. They did when I had them. YMMV.

Good pups though.

I've had Marshallheads in an 80's V for quite a few years now. Really like them. Just wanted a good PAF style pickup that would roll off well with volume and cover metal and classic rock. Wanted to try something other than 57 Classics (still like those too). They can do anything I throw at them. I haven't had a single thought about changing them out, even for curiosity, as they match so good with the V. AC/DC is my number one band and I play in that vain a lot. Plus it didn't hurt that at the time I lived a few neighborhoods away from Wolfe and he did them in a color that supposedly isn't common from all makers, but one ;)

I agree with what the others said. Wolfetone makes my favorite humbuckers and I think it'll fit exactly what you're looking for. I've had many pickups by motor City, tried almost all the bkp's line up, lundgren, wcr, arcanes, Klein, and probably others I can't remember and the marshallheads are hands down my favorite if you're looking a humbucker that isn't too hot and the neck pickup is by far the best I've tried!

The wolfetones breathe and have an organic quality to them that many of the other pickups I listed lack (especially the bare knuckles)

Thanks man.

You know, i considered some bkp and some other duncans (like a 59) but i think ima go with the Wolfetone now.

This precisely!
I've had a ton of boutique pups, Marshallheads beat them all!
I play with a fair amount of gain, more than AC DC, and have no problems with squealing

Bumping this thread because I’m interested in putting these in the Bridge & Dr V in the neck in one of my less Pauls.

It concerns me that they’re not wax potted and I usually play with JCM 800 levels of gain and boost those to get some chuggy Tool and Alice In Chains tape levels of gain and tones.

Cannot stand the squeal and I know that he will give them a light potting, but just want to see if anyone’s had these recently either potted or potted and what was your experience with feedback?

I got a wax potted Marshallhead/ Dr. Vintage set recently for my LP and it's a GREAT combination. Clarity, responsiveness, just the right amount of push, and a great feel.

I've got a couple of gigs on them at VH/ Billy Idol/ Journey levels of gain w/ loud wedges and had zero feedback issues.

Just request wax potting in the comments when you order, or email him. Wolfe is super-responsive and a great guy.

I've had a couple that were lightly potted and they were fine at gigging volumes, and my band covers Dio/Maiden/AiC/Metallica. I tried one unpotted before and it would definitely squeal if i wasn't careful so the potting took care of it. Wolfe is great.

Wolfetone makes great pickups that I would recommend to anyone.
But just for the sake of options, the Rio Grande BBQ bucker gave me a similar vibe as the Marshallhead

For reference I don’t have a Marshallhead or bbq anymore, but love my set of Wolfetone legends

I do get a bit of a squeal if I’m right on top of the amp but all it takes is a short distance for it to stop happening.

Yeah I’ve got two sets of the OG Dr Vintages (sub 100 serial numbers) that I’m gonna send up to him for a light pot.

Thx. Glad they’re working out for you.

This is helpful. Thx.

Are yours unpotted or the lightly potted?

I didn’t request anything other than just getting it. So if standard is unpotted, they may be that. I’ve had them for nearly 15 years.

I have gigged with Duncan Antiquities, BKP Mules, Thobak SLE-101s and Voodoo 59s. All of which are unpotted. I play with a lot of gain at loud volumes. For the past 15 years, I have either used a Splawn QuickRod on Gear 3 or an EVH 5150 III. I have not had any issues with squealing when I was not standing directly in front of the amp and facing the amp. (Potted pickups would feedback here as well.) I think way too much has been made of unpotted pickups and noise. If the pickup wire is wound tightly around the bobbin, you shouldn't have any issues.
