Yeah, I think it's gonna come out cool when I get the body back from MJT...

I had a vintage white Malmsteen style finished by MJT a few months ago. Turned out great! See below

I think thats the only mint green pickguard I've ever seen

I think maybe the Yngwie strats come with the mint green, or did maybe?

Still waiting for you to start your guitar company to go along with your amps!

When you call up MJT do you or do they specify what level of "relic" you'd like to see?
Take your red one for example. In my mind that would be an example of heavish relic. While some you see just have some buckle marks on the back and/or some forearm wear.

Either way, I find it pretty damn exciting & it's not even my stuff! lol

Me too, but I have 10 weeks or so to wait before I see that body back! ;)

MJT allows you to specify, the level and style of relic to a very detailed level and they were very accurate with what I asked for. I wouldn't say the red example I showed would be heavy. It has a lot of bare wood, but the color isn't very dirty or "cracked" looking. I'd say this one they did for me would be heavy:

Either way - you can get anything you want and they'll work with you... Matt is a great guy.

Yup, that white strat example is the "Oh this!? She's just getting broken in" kind of used for a billion hours & lots of stories to tell.

Pretty sweet, man!

Where'd you get the DEFT? I can't find that stuff anywhere. I got this baritone neck from National unfinished, shaped the heel, finished it and it came out stellar. I used the DEFT satin, put on multiple coats and waited like a month, then polished to a nice sheen. Awesome job on the decal. Always have been scared to do those. Sorry for the huge size.

That's a beautiful guitar! Well done!

Wait 'till you see that decal/headstock when I'm done sanding/polishing. Gonna be stellar!

I got the Deft over at Amazon. Just did a search for it and someone there had it...

Steve

I've seen DEFT at Walmart. Gloss, satin, flat.

Any automotive paint store that carries PPG should have or can get DEFT since it's a PPG product.

Looks fantastic Steve. Love these builds you do. Pretty stoked to see the finished product.

OK, I finished the headstock. I sanded the lacquer with 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 and 2500 grit sandpaper. You couldn't see it in the pictures, but there was a lot of orange peel in the finish and when you paint over a decal, the whole area around it is raised. What you have to do is get enough clear lacquer on so that you can sand the raised logo areas down flat. I used one of those flat rubber sanding blocks and went through the different grades. The 600 grit flattened the headstock lacquer around the decal and you can no longer even tell the logo is a decal. Looks like a silk screen!

Anyway, I thought I was done, but I looked at it under a lot of bright light and I could see a lot of scratches still. Scratches that would be too deep for the rubbing compound I planned to use. So I started over with 800 grit. I guess I got a little too aggressive, because I sanded through a bit of the decal, but no worries - it's gonna be a relic anyway!! :D

Once the finish was completely smooth, with minimal fine scratches, I could see that there was no need for rubbing compound at all since I'd gone all the way to 2500 grit sandpaper. All I would need to bring the shine back and get rid of the remaining superfine scratches would be some Meguiars ScratchX 2.0:

I applied it with a clean cloth and shined up the headstock, removing the rest of the fine scratches. Here is what it looks like now:

Decided to go with Grover Mini Locking Rotomatic tuners instead of the ugly Planet Waves. They have identical fit to the Planet Waves, so no issue with screw holes all over:

That's all for now... See ya back in this thread in a couple of months when MJT gets me the body back!

EVH paint has now been stripped off. Let the Fiesta Red begin!
